Lab3: Resistors

Reading time: 10 mins

In this prelab, we will touch two important topics:

  • Color code of a resistor.
  • How to use Multimeter to measure resistance.
  1. The color code of a resistor is a way to tell you designed resistance value of any resistor. Most resistor has 4 bands together, the first and second band indicate the first two significant figures of the resistor value, the third band indicates the multiplier, and the fourth band indicates the tolerance.

The following video demonstrates how to read color code from a resistor. This is a 10mins video, please at least watch the first 4 mins.

2. Multimeter, or digital multimeter (DMM) is one of the most important tools used in electrical circuit lab. It can be used to measure voltage, current, resistance, and often many other functions such as checking the reverse biasing of a diode. You should have a multimeter from your lab kits, so it is critical to order your lab kits on time.

The following video demonstrate basic applications of a multimeter.

Now you can work on the quiz on Blackboard. In your lab session, we will practice more about the applications.
