For this week’s Weekly Writing Assignment, compose a short memo (remember the memo header of TO, FROM, DATE, and SUBJECT) to Prof. Ellis with the subject, âExpanded Definition Research.” In the body of your memo, write and reflect on how and where you are finding sources for your Expanded Definition project. What databases and research websites are you using? Are you using The New York Times (signup for a free pass here) and Archive.org? No more than 250 words are needed. The main thing is to communicate to me that you are performing your due diligence to find useful definitions and contextual quotes of the term that you selected. Write your memo in your preferred word processor and then copy-and-paste your memo into a comment added to this post.

To research a topic for our expanded definition project, I turned into many different sources, such as Oxford English Dictionary, Britannica Academic, and NYTimes. I find plenty of resources about my topic, which is cloud computing. I am mainly using the city tech library database to conduct research; however, I find NYTimes useful because I got to see the many different views of my topic on a single website with only a few clicks. I am yet to use Archive.org since I am getting almost everything that I need from those websites. But I would love to browse through archive.org to see what’s in it for us.

For my 750-1000 word Expanded Definition Assignment, I have picked up several resources from the Citytechâs library database. My Chosen term was Cloud Computing, I have looked up the key terms to find appropriate search results for my research. For Example- Cloud Security, Cloud Infrastructure, Cloud Computing etc. I did my Research on citytechâs library. Under the library I went on Reference Guides which gave me several different resources to look up such as Oxford references, Oxford English Dictionary, Computer Science, and technology Encyclopedia etc. Besides, I looked up on IEEE Explore which gave me bunch of information for my topic. I looked up on journals, E-books, and Magazines to find the use of cloud computing term on several resources. I may try to look up some additional resources to find more definitions and contextual quotes for my research, but for right now I believe that I have enough sources to find the definitions and quotes from the libraryâs database.

For the expanded definition project, I conducted my research mainly from the CUNY City Tech library, Wiki and articles found on google for Amazon Web Services (AWS). One drawback to the CUNY City Tech library is the articles are very specific to services within AWS and not about AWS in general. This would make it very confusing to describe to someone with no knowledge of AWS.
The articleâs found on City Techs library is not for the novice user looking to gain general knowledge of AWS. The other sources such as Wiki and Google are more informative for the general description for AWS. I am not using the New York times or the Archive.org as my current source will be enough material for the paper. I donât think The New York Times or the Archive.org would be to knowledgeable in AWS/Cloud technology.

The term that I have chosen for the expanded definition project is âdatabaseâ because it is my major, and I would like to learn more about the origin of the word. I am using mostly the City Tech Library database to find my sources. Some of my sources are the Oxford dictionary. The Oxford dictionary demonstrates different time periods where the word âdatabaseâ is used in various articles, Merriam-Webster dictionary, and an Ebook from CityTech. Iâm going to do more research using New York Times or Archive.

For my expanded definition research, I used an article that was already describing alternate setups for the term âCloud Computingâ and grabbed the authors brief simple explanation of how they are traditionally set up. I searched for this article originally through the IEEE Xplore website, the other sources I had used both came from me searching through the City Tech online library. This gave me results from both books, âEncyclopedia of Computer Science and Technologyâ and âA Dictionary of Computer Scienceâ. The definition I had pulled from the Encyclopedia of Computer Science gave me yet another simple example and firm understanding of what the term was used for. Going over to the definition I pulled from A Dictionary of Computer Science, this gives an absolute textbook definition of the term, as well as gives some basics of what Cloud Computing is capable of and how it is frequently used. With these three definitions, I feel as if I was able to hit a wide variety of complexity for what Cloud Computing can be used for and what it will continue to be able to do in the future.
