My name is Kandis Mclean and I am at Sunset Residential Center in Sunset Park of Brooklyn located on 45th and 4th avenue. My community clinical site although being part of Lutheran does not permit us as students to do home visits so we basically do blood pressure assesments for all those in the community room whom wish to have it done. After we have obtained consent, which we have in both english and spanish, we can take the residents’ blood pressure. This may seem simple but it is important for the health of the residents whom many carry cards to actually monitor their own pressures. My first clinical experience was focused upon an elderly woman and her daughter in law whom came over to our table to have their pressures taken. The daughter in law spoke english well and her blood pressure was in normal range, but her mother in law spoke no english. My fellow peer took the pressure and got 170/80 and wrote it on her card. Despite the language barrier, I proceeded to ask, “Tu tienes problemas con so presion?” The daughter in law proceeded to ask her mother in law if she had taken the medication for that day which we would learn was actually a diuretic and Norvasc combination therapy. The mother in law admitted she forgot and the daughter in law was advised immediately to give it to her. That day we were required to meet our group by Shore Hill so we left too early to do a recheck an hour later to see if the medication was truly effective. This is a person I surely would like to follow up, but also will walk with educational materials specifically in Spanish due to the majority of clients that we did do pressures for spoke minimial to no english. I learned it is always important to find a way to communicate, because irregardless there will not always be a client whom can speak English, but would benefit for the education from a nurse.
