Case Study #1
39 year old Hispanic male. Currently taking Amlodipine Besylate (Norvasc) 5mg once per day. No significant extra oral findings. Intra oral exam showed generalized gingival hyperplasia. A common side effect of calcium channel blockers is gingival hyperplasia. Patient stated for this growth to have occurred over a few years. Due to bone loss and gingival overgrowth patient was classified as a type IV. Treatment was never completed due to patient compliance. Patient was counseled to see his doctor about possible medication change.
Case Study #2
51 year old male. No significant finding on medical history. Patient is a frequent patient of the CityTech clinic. Periodontal classification was type II due to generalized 3-5mm probing depths. Patient was classified as a heavy due to heavy calculus deposits with anterior, lingual staining on both the mandible and maxilla. After scaling was completed air polishing was used to remove the staining. Patient was counseled about multiple areas of decay and recommended to come back every 3 months.
