The passport photo checker that the UK launched this year caused about a lot of controversy. The controversy was due to the fact that the Home Office of the UK decided to deploy the passport photo checkers knowing fully well that it was malfunctioned and had problems identifying people with dark skin. The issue sparked a heated debate about how many software companies like Microsoft and Google create facial recognition technology discriminating against people with dark skin. In my lens research essay, I am going to explore the dangers of government agencies like the law enforcement agencies using this racially biased facial recognition software on a daily basis. I am studying this issue because I want to know if people as well as the government is aware of this and doing something to resolve this issue in the near future.
