The reflection of oneself can sometimes be unsatisfactory because we can be our own worst critic. In the relation to Community Health Nursing, I can honestly and genuinely say my clinical rotation with this course has been my best throughout my nursing educational career. I was placed at Cumberland Diagnostic Center, within the Womens health clinic. I learned so much not only related to nursing and the
community; but about diversity, culture, education, and awareness.
Everyday I had the opportunity to not only learn something new, whether it be a drug, illness, procedure, or ailment. However, what made me enjoy this clinical semester so much was that I had the opportunity to help, educate, and advocate for the clientele of this facility. I felt respected, needed, and
felt that my knowledge and opinion really mattered. At the end of every clinical day I felt greatly appreciated.
It amazed me how many women in our community are not educated and aware of things that we sometimes take for granted. There were women who never seen a doctor until the age of fourty. There were women who did not know the services that the community provided because they were not aware of free services that were provided for them. There were women with sexually transmitted diseases who
continued to sleep with their significant other unprotected because they felt that once they were treated the disease would go away. My eyes were open to so many things the clients would say, because they were not aware.
Moreover, in the discussion of reflection I can say that I am proud of what I am.I am proud of what I did, and most importantly I am proud of what my community has made me become. All my life I was never aware of the increased need of education in my back door. As a registered nurse, the following elements of advocacy, cultural competency, education, assessment, planning, and treatment; I can say I had the opportunity to exercise each element.
People may think that money is the greatest award. To me my patients gratitude and appreciation is all I need. I know that I have and will continue to make a difference. Although, I am a fully employed registered nurse. The knowledge, practices, and education that I have given and received from Community Health Nursing is more than money can ever buy.
