Community Service
As part of our Introduction to Public Health course, we had the privilege of visiting the HeartShare Human Services of New York, located at Metrotech Building, Brooklyn. The students there displayed mild intellectual disability. I found that the two occasions on which we met with them to be very rewarding and learning. It proved to be challenging as we taught tooth brushing, flossing and healthy food choices. They were so appreciative, eager and attentive. We knew that they learnt from our tell-show- do encounter as they were able on the second visit to review and do all that we taught. I think that this population could be easily forgotten and I look forward to being a part of this continued dental health education. I am just thankful for this small opportunity of being a positive influence in their lives.
