At Dr. Branco’s office, I learned how to effectively communicate with patients and dental professionals. Many times, a patient would call with a concern, and I would be the “go-between” for the patient and Dr. Branco. I had to develop an understanding of dental terms and procedures, as well as the ability to explain those terms and procedures to a layperson. This ability will continue to serve me throughout my career.
I also learned practical office skills, such as how to schedule appointments, complete insurance claims and maintain patient files, complete billing/accounting, use the Patterson Eaglesoft Computer Interface System, and order supplies. These office skills will allow me to assist in making a dental practice run smoothly.
Most importantly, Dr. Branco allowed me to develop many clinical skills. He showed me how to take radiographs before I began at New York City College of Technology. He encouraged me to continue to take radiographs while taking classes. Dr. Branco taught me how to mix stone and pour models, and now I am able to create study models on a regular basis. I am able to take alginate impressions as well. I know how to maintain and operate an ultrasonic instrument cleaner, as well as a Ritter M9D AutoClave sterilizer. I have been processing and packaging instruments for the duration of my employment for Dr. Branco. These clinical skills will allow me to work in many offices, and I am truly grateful to Dr. Branco for his patience and willingness to teach.
