For three years, I was an elementary school teacher at the Grand Concourse Academy Charter School in the Bronx, NY. I was a general education and special education teacher. My first year, I was lead teacher in a classroom of eight at-risk fifth graders. Four students had individualized education plans due to their learning needs. In my second and third years at GCA, I was the lead teacher in an integrated co-teaching classroom. There were 15 students in my second class, and 25 students in my third class. Approximately 1/3 of the students in each class had individualized education plans.
As the lead teacher, I was responsible for writing and conducting lessons in all subject areas including English language arts, math, writing, science, and social studies. At the same time, I wrote separate small-group plans and organized learning activities for the assistant teacher to use with the children with IEPs. I conducted all classroom testing and grading, wrote all report cards, communicated with parents and school administrators, and worked together with other teachers in learning communities. For the students with IEPs, I monitored progress on goals, attended yearly progress meetings, and wrote their IEPs.
