2007-2012: Young Adult Institute

For five years, I worked as a direct service professional at the Young Adult Institute in Tarrytown, a day program dedicated to serving adults with intellectual, physical, and developmental disabilities. I was the lead teacher in a classroom for senior citizens (aged 50 and up). I was also an individual service coordinator for the people in my program room.

As a DSP, I designed, adapted, and led classroom activities in many areas, including activities of daily living, plant care, jewelry-making/crafting, exercise, music appreciation, and many community outings. I tracked daily progress, completed daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly progress notes, attended progress meetings, and selected goals/wrote year-long plans. I also provided guidance for the classroom assistant.

As an ISC, it was my job to facilitate communication between the day program, an individual’s residence, and his/her case worker. I completed additional paperwork and maintained files.
