Course Syllabus: Gender Dress and Society

Course Description: The course delves into the exploration of theories concerning appearance, clothing, and fashion, along with their impact on cultural identities, gender perceptions, and the consumption of fashion products. It conducts an examination of contemporary dress both within and outside the United States. Participants analyze dress as a communication system, serving to convey individuality and denote one’s position within distinct social systems encompassing kinship, economy, religion, and polity. The technologies and various forms of dress within a specific society are subject to analysis, providing insights into their connection with behavioral patterns, including beliefs related to morality, hygiene, ritual, and beauty.
