ā€œThat was so cute Birdā€ by Piper Disney Pixar was a four minute show viewed in class. What I took away from this animation was you have to get over your fears. If I had to apply this show to my personal life when if came to graphic design is I have to step out of your comfort zone. The only way to grow and learn new things is to try. What Professor took away from this show was when we have a clear vision we know what to go after. That theory is also true. Starting this class I was all over the place not knowing what industry I wanted to specialize in. I thought it was even okay to not know and just gain experience in everything. Now I see it is best to specialize and grow your talents and skill sets in a particular area. So like the cute little bird I see the prize and I am going to focus and go after it. I also choose to get out of my comfort zone like the bird and decided to network within my industry. I bought a ticket to attend this yearā€™s How Design Live. I even booked a couch in a strangers apartment through Air b&b so if thats not steeping out of comfort zones I have no idea what is.

We also watched a Ted Talk given by David Carson. David Carson was a sociologist and surfer turned graphic designer. Like most designers he is very observant of his surroundings and how design and type comes into play. He believesĀ  in emotions of design, that feeling you get when you first look at the design. I do not know if that is the reason he throws out the function of making his type readable in order to have an appealing design. I can not say I am a fan of of Mr. Carsonā€™s work because of my own work style. Everything I put on paper is there for a reason, to serve a purpose and to communicate to someone clearly. I do not design just for the reason that it looks pretty but since David Carson has been best known for being the inventor of grunge design I guess that type of design works for him.

What I did learn from Mr. Carson and I am willing to apply to my work is that you should experiment and put yourself into the work. Include your background, your personality, your story into your work. Sometimes when we are given the same projects in class its a fear of mine that my work might come out like the person next to me. If I was able to apply my Caribbean background, my love for abstract painting and whatever styles that are unique to me I can make some outstanding work. I am interested in making a style that is unique to me. Due to the fact that they are many jobs that put peopleā€™s life at risk being a creative, experimental graphic designer is not one so just go a little crazy on your work. And at the end of the day I do see me myself working as a graphic designer, a job I would be doing paid or unpaid so this is how I know I am following my purpose.
