Generally when it comes to putting something on one’s skin, comfort is an important factor. While camels’ fur, sheeps’ wool and palm tree leaves are players in some of Dubai’s creations (Tawfik, 2022), in Dubai one will see clothes made of lighter materials such as cotton and linen. The abaya, while generally made of cotton, will sometimes be made up of crepe, satin or silk (Khadija, 2023; Marlena, 2022). Similarly, the kandora is usually made of cotton, wool or linen. The materials for both are chosen for their lightweight and breathable properties.
There are many articles of clothing native to the city of Dubai. Being that Dubai is modest, one will see clothes that will cover a majority of Muslims in spite of the warm weather. Native to Dubai are traditional garbs such as the abaya and the kandora. Since other countries within the UAE follow the same guideline in terms of dressing modestly, one is likely to see these articles of clothing outside Dubai. The abaya is a robe for the Muslim woman that covers the whole body not including hands or the face. The kandora is the male equivalent to the abaya covering the full length of the individual with the exception of the hands and face and is usually white (Holidify, 2023; Day Out Dubai, 2019). Both clothing pieces allow the UAE people to follow their religious code while still being comfortable in the high heat.
