Culmination Project

CULMINATION PROJECT PROPOSAL

My name is Jorge Buenaventura, I’m currently on my final path to graduation with only one more class left. I’ve been in School for the last 3 years where I have learned a lot about lighting and video in the Entertainment Industry, making lighting my strong path to follow. I have taken technical production 3 times only working with the lighting team, being once the head crew\electrician, which gave me a clear idea when working with a lighting plot as well as expanding my knowledge with the paperwork needed for the project. I also collaborated with Bindlestiff Open Stage Variety Show as a lighting console operator for one of their shows during the 2022 fall semester.

The idea for my Culmination Project came from a conversation with Professor Miguel Valderrama to become an active part of the teamwork for the Nelson Lugo Magic show as Lighting Designer and console programmer, that will take place at the Voorhees Theater on April 19 and April 20. My goal for this project is to create a lighting design with the collaboration of Professor Valderrama that will enhance or fit perfectly with the performance of Nelson Lugo during his solo show.

To achieve this, I will be creating a lighting plot which will indicate the position of each light, channel number, gel or color assigned to the fixtures for each electric at the Voorhees Teather by following Professor Valderrama instructions and some basic steps like:

Reviewing equipment inventory at the school or lighting plot if there is already one.

Decide on a basic design vision for the show.

Checking the dimmer counts to make sure we have enough circuits.

Making sure the fixture key/legend is correct so electricians can hang the correct lights.

With the creation of this lighting plot, I will be able to build the following documents:

Channel Hook up:  consist of every lighting fixture that will be used sorted by channel number.

Instrument Schedule: this is organized by hanging position and unit number with each electric having its own page starting from stage left.

Magic Sheet: it is a graphical representation of the instruments on the plot showing focus points, channel numbers and direction.

I know this cannot be done by myself so I would be counting on the help of the lighting team from Tech Production class Spring 2024.

What I would expect from this project is to acquire further experience and skills as a lighting designer and console programmer which has been limited at school by applying all the knowledge gather during all these 3 years at Citytech, so I can be more confidence when applying for a job or when working at another venue.
