Welcome to the Spring 2025 semester and the Building Technology II course.

This semester there 4 sections of BT2 they are as follows:

The mode of instruction is in-person lecture and lab, we will be meeting all scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays (or Wednesday and Friday). As a 3/4 lab class, be prepared to work in class during all our meetings.

For the first class, prepare a short presentation, six images minimum, about your work your and your interest, in Miro it should include:

• Name and last name
• A recent picture of you
• Your interests/hobbies
• ARCH1231 Building Tech I
  • Module 1: ordering plan, plan, section, and elevation
  • Module 2: plan detail, wall section, axon detail 
  • Module 3: timber framing, or group urban design project  
• 3 Design drawings and images from 1 project minimum

Software tools the class will be using include:

You are encouraged to set up accounts and or download these software applications prior to class.

You will be required to keep your work updated on both a hard drive or flash drive AND on the cloud (Drop Box or OneDrive or similar).

I have posted some answers to questions I have received on the open lab bulletin board in case they are helpful. I’m looking forward to seeing your drawings in class on Tuesday.

The questions are in blue my responses are in green.

1. Should the plans include labels for everything, such as the kitchen and bathrooms, along with the numbers associated with these areas?

The convention for architectural drawings is that they include all casework, or all built in furniture so that would include kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and not tables and chairs.

2. Regarding the dimensions, such as the length and width of spaces and the placement of everything within them, should all details be included as they are in the picture, or only what we deem necessary?

You may reduce the amount of information in the plans you should include some dimensions. The best strategy is to think about the purpose of your architectural drawings. In this case we are designing the set for a contractor so you should think about what a contractor would need to build the project.

3. I’ve noticed that we need four drawings for assignment B01 Plans:

As discussed in class the B01 drawing list did needed to be updated for this semester. The B01 drawing  list currently on the openlad is updated to reflect the current module B project (for sections: Semmler D075 [2:30PM], Aptekar D076 [2:30PM], & E078 [6:00PM]).

I’ve completed A-101 (the basement) and A-104 (the long section aka the first image provided in openlap ), but I’m not sure if A-104 is the roof plan because I can’t see it labeled elsewhere. Could you please clarify if I’m on the right track?

The second section should be labeled “A-301 BUILDING SECTIONS (east to west) “ there will be a requirement to complete a roof plan but it is not a requirement for this submission. See the revised assignment B01 on openlab.

For A-102 (the ground floor), I noticed some discrepancies between the AutoCAD file and the first floor provided in the open lab. Are we supposed to delete these differences? I’ve attached an image of what I found in the AutoCAD file for reference.

A-102 in the AutoCAD template file is an example of how to draw in plan. The plan included in the template is from a different case study. You will need to develop the ground floor from the planned and images on the miro board and on openlab.

As for A-103 (the second floor), I couldn’t find any reference in the open lab. How should we proceed with drawing it?

Levels 2 through 6 as discussed in class will all be considered typical apartment units that a typical apartment unit plan is the one currently labeled 6th floor. You only need one plan “A-103 6TH FLOOR”  to represent floors 2 through 6 in this project.

he PSC Environmental Justice Working Group will host a Decarbonize CUNY Town Hall, co-organized with campus leaders and Public Power NY. This event aims to educate members, our students, and our communities, and to increase pressure on the New York Power Authority as they develop a plan of action this winter. This event will make our voices heard on the need to decarbonize CUNY’s over 300 buildings.

Question:

How can I download a high resolution image so that the dimensions of the plans can be seen clearly?

Response:

In Open Lab if you click on the image and then download it you’ll get a higher resolution image. If you directly download the thumbnail that shows up when you first open the Module A page you will get a low-resolution image.

Emailed question:
I’m not understanding the part of how we get the footing depth.

Design a strategy follows:

1. Start calculating your footing depth by thinking about the givens
2. Set ground floor to elevation 0
3. Utilize the section from Matt’s to set the street level to -2’-7”
4. Look at your selected boring report to sketch of the earth under your building
5. Use boring labeled B11, B16, B8, B5, or MW-7D as your test case
6. Set as your Street level +10’ on the boring diagram
   [this is a change what we discussed in class, in class we set it at +25’ but we changed the level in the evening section, you may use either however =10’ will give you a more interesting case study]
7. Diagram different soil types and the weight they can support on your sketch
8. set your footing depth as follows depending on your foundation type:
9. slab on grade, as shallow as possible

• slab on grade, as shallow as possible
  [Depending on your sketch you can make the case that this is not an appropriate foundation type and switch to crawl space or full cellar]
• Crawl space, minimum depth with 3’ minimum crawl space
  [use gravel under your building]
• Full cellar, design your cellar floor depth, you should have a minimum clear space of 8’ between ceiling and top of floor
  [your footing it goes at least 1’-8” below your top of cellar floor (see assignment sketch)]

When I print my drawing as PDF, my furniture drawing has few line weight is heavy than others. I use the same layer, but it still comes with heavier line than others. I attached two images of the issue.

There are several reasons this could be occurring. there are similar colors that might not be clear when you view your file in model space make sure your line is of a color that’s set to a line thickness. There are also overrides for elements that are blocks or groups check that the line is set to print lineweight as layer color.
