Building Height

Question:
What is the building’s height that we are currently making the plans and elevations for?

Solution:
Utilized the elevation drawings of maison Gartte-Cie case study project on OpenLab. You know the long East-West dimension (55’) from the dimension diagram. Use that information to scale the elevation drawings. You are encouraged to do more research on the case study building including it’s dimensions, consider searching for more drawings and evaluating building pictures.

    For Fall 2022, working in METRIC units, another way to determine building height (and other elevation dimensions) is to find the long section in the MODULES tab, Module A (Quinconce). There are two so find the one that has clear dimensions. You’ll be able to offset your elevation heights from the dimensions shown on this drawing. Some helpful hints:

    • Dimensions that have a raised number at the end (usually a 5) indicate a half centimeter or .5cm
    • When starting your elevation or section, start from the TOP of the building where all the dimension strings branch out from. Note there are several datums at the bottom of the drawing including: the grade at the street side, step at street side, top of slab at the covered patio, grade at the garden, and two elevations in the interior ground floor.
    • Check the measurements by adding up a dimensions string. For example: there are 3 dimensions for the Living Room side: 60, 260, and 290, totaling 610cm. Now add up the dimensions in the the next string and check that it is also 610cm.
