Assignments Mon/Thurs class

I’ve listed the assignments with the most recent one on top.

Assignment for Thursday, October 29

Write a paragraph where you describe what topic you want to use for your Final (Research) Project, why you’re interested in it, what questions you have, what you know already, etc.

Monday, October 5

  • NO REGULAR CLASS MEETING ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1.
  • Conferences all week.
  • For Monday, October 5 —
    • Do a rough draft (“Shitty First Draft”) of your Unit Essay (Personal Essay).
    • See the assignment itself under Syllabus in the Files section of this site.
    • Bring in two (2) copies: one for your group and one for me.

Assignment #6 (for Monday, September 28)

Do the Visual Literacy/Rhetorical Analysis Activity.

  • Pick a visual text to analyze. This can be almost anything. Here are some suggestions:
    • a website of your choice
    • a Facebook page, especially if it’s of a company but it can be a “real” person’s site if you wish
    • a movie (fiction, documentary, short, long)
    • an ad campaign (I mentioned the Dove soap campaign about real bodies, so don’t pick that one!)
    • a political ad or series of ads
    • any of the kinds of texts that are listed on the Doing Visual Rhetoric Analysis handout page
    • any other visual text or texts that you can think of
  • Write up your analysis. It can be handwritten, but bring it with you.
  • Include the url of the text, or put it on a flash drive. We’ll share these on Monday.
  • There are two handouts, both of which will be posted in the Handouts & Readings/File section by the end of Thursday, Sept 24:
    • Visual Literacy/Rhetorical Analysis Activity sheet which has all the questions you need to answer.
    • Doing Visual Rhetoric Analysis which talks about audience and lists the different purposes of texts (informational, inspirational, motivational, functional). This Handout also gives you a list of some of the kinds of texts you can look at for this Activity.

Assignment #5 (for Thursday, September 24)

  • Catch up! Do the Summary-Analysis for both Naylor and Cofer.
  • It’s a murder case! You’ve done the detective’s case notes and the coroner’s report. Now do these two things:
    • a short eulogy for the victim.
    • the summation to the jury at the end of a trial, with you as the prosecuting attorney trying to get a conviction.

Assignment #4 (for Monday, September 21)

  • Write a Summary and Analysis for both readings (Naylor, Cofer).
  • If you haven’t turned in your Pocket Folder, bring it to turn in.

Assignment #3 (for Thursday, September 17)

  • Write a summary and analysis for both readings (Tan, Marquez).
  • Bring your pocket folder with you. Put the Summary-Responses you did for Week 2 in it. Put Summaries and Analyses of Alexie and Malcolm X in it. Put the freewrite on your Single Story in it. You’ll be adding the Summary-Analyses for Tan and Marquez in it at the end of class.

Assignment #2:

  • Write a summary for Alexie and Malcolm X pieces.
  • Write an analysis (Description, Evaluation, Response) forboth readings:
    • If you’ve forgotten how to write the analysis, go either to Files on the Open Lab main course page OR click on Readings & Handouts on the navigation bar. Find “Handout; Writing the Analysis.”

Assignment #1:

  • Either Go to Files on the Open Lab course main page OR click on Handouts & Readings on the top navigation bar.
