Since an early age, I have dreamed of becoming a part of the arts. Growing up, I would watch cartoons and say to myself, ” I want to learn how to do that.” Inspiration came from watching shows like “Hey Arnold!” created by artist Craig Bartlett and “The Powerpuff Girls” created by artist Craig McCracken. I knew I would want a career in graphic communications, but I did not know the exact major yet.
I wanted to become a cartoonist but decided not to because it is too time consuming. I always liked Vincent Van Gogh’s artwork since I was in elementary school for his unique style and thought about becoming an artist, but realized it would not be enough financially. It was around high school when I officially decided to do advertising design. During high school, I discovered the surrealist artist Rene Magritte, and liked his artistic creativity and wanted to adapt some ideas into my own artwork.
With my mind set on becoming an advertising designer, I applied to the New York City College of Technology ready to improve my art skills and learn different computer software. I have taken some courses that have helped some of my goals: Graphic Design Principles 1 taught me different concepts of art such as foreground/ background, negative space, texture, pattern, and collage; foundation drawing taught perspective, shadows, and contour line; publication media taught how to create spreads with InDesign. As I continue to attend this school, I hope I will gain the skills I need and become an advertising designer.
