The 1970s was a time of new cultural approaches to sexuality, many of which were reflected in what were seen at the time as radically different dress practices.
- Let’s look at a contemporary example of this. Read the article “Suddenly It’s Bare Season” by Guy Trebay which was published by the New York Times in summer 2021.
- Then, think about the following questions:
- Do you agree with the author of the article about the reasons he is putting forth for people wearing this “more revealing” clothing?
- Mariano Fortuny’s Delphos dress was seen as scandalous when worn in 1909, because it was designed to be worn without undergarments. It was worn only by a small number of “artistic” women. Do you see the dress practice described in this article as a niche practice that only a small number of people will engage in? Or do you think that dress practice more will trend this way on a wider social scale?
- What are the ways that your own dress practice considers propriety?
