As we think about the relationship between the material and stylistic elements of a garment and the amount of money that the garment can be sold for, let’s look at a recent example of a writer questioning the value of a piece of clothing.
- First, read the New York Times article “What in the World is a $590 Scratch-n-Sniff T-shirt Doing in 2020” by Caity Weaver.
- Then, think about these questions:
- How does value become instilled in garments?
- Do you think that the designer Jeanne Lanvin, if she were alive today, would market a garment like this?
- What historical parallels can you draw between the early 1930s and the early years of the 2020s? Do you see this t-shirt as a form of escapism?
- Do you, personally, see value in a designer t-shirt with this scent function?
