Art or Play?

Over the years, art has taken many shapes. Every couple of decades or centuries, someone comes out and changes the art style of the time. Carsten Holler has become the game changer of our time. A lot of people in the world appreciate a good hands on exhibition, especially one that leaves them in confusion and thought. He has found a way to bring hands-on, learning, and confusion all together in one museum. It may not seem to be art, but then again, it depends on the audience. Art comes in many shapes and sizes. Who is to say that that is not what Holler created?

“Real Art” vs. Digital Reproductions

When people go to museums, there is a certain feeling that goes through them when they experience the art in front of them. You can only really get that true feeling when the “real art” is in front of you. Do not get me wrong though, there are many positive sides to digital reproductions. For example, if the artwork is in a different country then like Italy, then digital reproductions will definitely be of good use to the people living in the united states that cannot make it out there. Another thing that i want to point out is that from what i can see from the link that the professor provided for us, the imaging is crystal clear. You can see the artwork as it were the real thing right in front of you.

The point that I am trying to get at is if you have the opportunity to see the art in its “real” form, then that would definitely be the way to go.

Not just seeing but experiencing the art

Honestly i like where he wants to take this. in art we usually take emotions from past experiences and put them on paper (or sculpt) then the viewers try to interpret it. Höller gives us the opportunity to appreciate his work with not only what we see but our 4 other senses as well. on top of that he create an adventure for us in the form of an amusement park. it was funny when the NY times called it the jackass for the museum. i believe that his work is not traditional art but artistic nevertheless. the sistine chapel and ecstasy of saint teresa were monumental at the time because it was fresh and unique. people wouldn’t dear come close to attempting artwork like this as if it was taboo. this reminds me of the expression of joy by Robin Rhode. its different to what Höller shows but it is original and genius.

Museum visitor to Carsten Höller exhibit

Happy Thanksgiving!  This post is designed as a make-up for those who need to blog more.  This week you will explore the work of another contemporary artist Carsten Höller, whose exhibition, “Carsten Höller: Experience,” recently opened at the New Museum on the Bowery.  Read one of the following reviews from the New York Times about the exhibition, or go experience the show for yourself!  If you do visit, you will have to sign waivers to participate and use the machines, plus anyone under 4 feet tall cannot ride the 3-story slide, and bring a bathing suit for the full experience!

Do these installations sound like art to you?  Think about how Höller’s works compare to earlier environments, such as the Sistine Chapel or the Cornaro Chapel with Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. How do these different works of art engage audiences of their times?

Modern Day Art

Today modern art has really grown over time. Modern can be expressed in way that people can ever imagine. Its either in a picture form, sculpture form, or even in a musical/acting form. It is amazing how Rashaad Newsome is portraying his form of modern art. The different materials and patterns to create such a great piece of work. This also reminds me of the origami that i make and use different colors and different patterns to put it together to create and express my way feelings in an art form to show to other people instead of speaking to people. I really like Rashaad Newsome’s form of art in way that catches the attention of of young adults.

Discussion Topic: Bling!

Rashaad Newsome’s work is quite interesting as he blends modern art and hip hop with Heraldry. Although it is something new and creative, personally it does not appeal to me. I could see where he coming from using hearldry combined with todays hip-hop and pop culture to show economic and social status. I think the dollar signs and rims on his frames take away from the classical look. For example one of his works “let them eat cakes”. This work is basically a collage of a girl’s back side. That is what you mostly see in hip hop videos today. There is too much going on in his pictures. It is a good attempt to bring the new generation to like his art but I think that the people who have a taste in classical art would not find this appealing. It seems odd and out of place in my opinion. Aside from his pictures, his video ideas are more catchy.

The Blast of Culture

Rashaad Newsome has a very distinct way of putting his works of art together.  Although I never see much art, I thought Mr. Newsomes work was very intersting. To the naked eye one would challenge the Rasshaads work but after looking at his art, I saw the diversity within hia art. I saw the diffferent cultures and the history that help to portray the sense of cultural diffusion. Can anyone imagine looking at other works of art and not understanding what the purpose of piece is but when looking at Rashaads work you get a sense of meaning and asense of pride? i agree with the statement,“He is very much a child of this generation who embraces everything that moves and is pop and is music, and puts it in a blender and makes it their own, so I’m impressed by that,” said Klaus Biesenbach because, as a generation with such lack of interest in many things, the things that do interest them such as hip hop, pop culture and bling, allows them to make connections with this variation of art.

Impossible Exhibitions, The Caravaggio Show

I would definitely go to a museum to see digital reproduction of famous works of art. It would be a lot cheaper than traveling to different places to see the real thing. I think its a good way to observe all of the great works of art in one place. Then, if you really like the work you can make plans to go see the real thing. This would be a great way to sample the art before you go a see it. I would prefer to see the real work of art, but it would be too expensive.

Historical Hip-Hop

I can see how his art can be called historical in that he is creating
an armorial representation using cultural symbols. I feel that
although some of his work looks really good and well done, a lot of
his work is just a bunch of images stuffed into a really small space,
and it seems way to full and overdone. A lot of his collages seem like
they would be fairly east to create with a photo editor program and
doing a Google search on “hip-hop cultural symbols”.
I found the following link searching Rashaad Newsome on Google.

View of "Impossible" Caravaggio exhibit at Loyola University in Chicago

In Italy, there is a trend to launch ‘Impossible Exhibitions” for renowned artists, such as Raphael, Leonard, and Caravaggio.  In these exhibitions, all the works of art produced by one artist are assembled together in a museum setting.  Unfortunately, it is impossible to pull together all the works of art that are scattered in various public and private collections across many nations.  The only way to display an “Impossible Exhibition” is by projecting high-resolution reproductions of works of art.  For the last several years, Caravaggio: an impossible exhibition has traveled to various venues, including Loyola University in Chicago.  Explore images of the Caravaggio show in the link below.  Would you go to a museum to see digital reproductions of famous works of art?  Do you think it is important to see “real” works of art, or are reproductions just as effective?
