Topic Proposal:
Our site features an in depth view of New York City College of Technology. Instead of just having the directions and addresses for City Tech; we thought it would be helpful if we could actually provided students and anyone interested in visiting City Tech, the opportunity to see the best out of City Tech. Our main goal is to provide people with images and videos of the different buildings that City Tech has to offer. We noticed from the beginning that City Techâs main site did not have much but the website and a decent map that displayed the buildings from an animated point of view. We decided to use that image as a starting point to gather information on how many buildings City Tech has. The buildings that City Tech currently has are the Atrium, Environmental Center, General, Howard, Midway, Namm Hall, Pear St., and Voorhees. Since City Techâs contact information already provided us with an overview of the buildings and the different ways you can get there, we thought we would go a little further and actually show the buildings from our point of view. We have decided to break up into three different areas and have each group member take pictures of their assigned buildings and share them on our Instagram app and later choose the best images for our site. We have actually also decided to not only take pictures but get small clips of us walking around and filming some of the buildings. One of the ways we actually thought of recording was using our Vine app to spice up the video and make it more enjoyable for the viewers.
The second thing our site has to offer are the different rooms and places that are important for the average student or person seeking help. This idea was brought up because one of the sources we got from City Techs website shows all the departments with the their contact information and room numbers; so we thought it would be a good idea to use their page and take some of the ones we thought would be helpful, and combine them with images and videos to give the viewer a better idea of how the room or place should looks like, just incase they want to check it out in person. We even tried to find videos on YouTube on the different buildings of City Tech and maybe some tours but there really wasnât much. We had even found a YouTube channel, which I am not sure if it was created by the school its self or by a student or faculty member, but it didnât matter because although we could not find any video sources to help our project we thought we would create our own. Of course the videos will not be long, just enough to give you an idea of how the place or building looks like.
We actually didnât have much to work with but the things City Techs website had to offer. Since we are focusing our site on the school it self, it is kind of difficult finding resources about the school. Some of the other sources that we used were pictures that where displayed on Google Images, and used those as references to not replicate the pictures people have previously taken. It gave us an idea of where to start and think of places others have not gone before. Like I said before, since we could not find videos that displayed different parts of the school, we thought we could be the first to get close and share our views of the places most used at City Tech. This new resource we are trying to create will give the viewer a more realistic and reliable idea of how the school looks like; it will give them an idea of what to expect if they have not been to one of the places before. Overall the point of our site is mostly targeted for the freshman or people looking for information on the buildings and places City Tech has to offer. It probably wont do good for the students who have been in the school for some time now, but it wouldnât hurt to look and share some of there experiences and photos on our site.
Documentation/Research Proposal:
Similar to our topic proposal, what better way to find research than the schools website? Since we were focusing our site primarily for City Tech students and incoming students, we used the school’s map and their directory department to give us a general idea of where to begin. Since the website didnât have many pictures of the school, we decided to do a quick Google search for images of New York City College of Technology and realized there really wasnât much variety. We used this as an opportunity to go in a little further and take pictures of places that are important for City Tech students. Some other ideas in improving our research would have been if we had actually found up to date videos of City tech, but again their really wasnât much. We couldnât just take pictures because we felt like that had already been done so we decided to go a little further and record footage of the buildings themselves and even go inside and get images or video of the important places in City Tech. Some of the things that I would of never thought of it being beneficial were actually very fun and easy to use. Previously I thought apps like Vine and Instagram were only used for entertainment purposes but it turns out it made our job a little easier, we were able to share the pictures without all of us actually having to be in the same place, all we had to do was share the same account. It turns out social media programs can actually be used for more than just a quick laugh.
The process in getting our work done was not hard because we have so many things available for us because of technology. The only problem I could say we had was finding better resources or maybe find something a little more interesting than just things from the school website. I think the easiest part of the process was just taking pictures, but finding the right way and best angles to take it from was a bit complicated, which is why we also decided to include video footage to show exactly where the location of a picture may be. We were able to fulfill our idea because I donât think City Tech or any other site has ever constructed a site for only images and videos. We didnât really know where else to find information or images about City Tech so we made the site primarily for City Tech students and the incoming freshman. Of course the site will also be available for anyone who wants to get an idea of what City Tech has to offer. One of the ideas we had after we had finished our process was actually creating a separate page for anyone to come in and share their pictures or videos on to our site, which will of course be verified before it can be uploaded. We thought that because there is so much resource on many things that people donât really get the information they need from only one source, which is why we decided to create that separate page to help people find there way around school by not only using our information, but coming together as one, like a social media site, explicitly based on City Tech. This idea was supported by the different techniques we used to acquire our information. Since social media is used frequently we decided to implement it into our site, which will make it really easy for anyone to share their ways around City Tech.
Overall the main focus of our site is to construct a site dedicated for anyone interested in learning more about City Tech and figuring out where they want to be without the struggle of getting lost or being late for a building that they have never been to. It will be a resource site that uses todays popular social media sites to help people come together and share their experiences with each other the best of City Tech. For more information on our site you can actually visit New York City College of Technologyâs website to see where we got the information from. You can also check out City Techâs YouTube channel to see what they have uploaded in the past, and you can see some of the images Google has to offer about City Tech.
