STEM RESEARCH DAY

The main point of this presentation was to explain the role of engineering problem solving, and more efficient ways to approach solutions to problem in a social and/or poverty obstacles by using observation and studying each case scenario individually.

There were two main speakers in the event. The first speaker was Noha El Ghobashy, director of ASME global development community and president of ‘Engineering for Change’. The second speaker was Dr. Ola Harrysson, associate professor (Department of industrial engineering, North Carolina State University).

Mrs. Noha, explained her role in the Engineering for Change group, and how they help to solve problems in poor and undeveloped communities in the world. Her main idea was to design products and technology to help local communities grow. Therefore, the design of such technology and products must include three categories. It has to be affordable, accessible and aspiring. Some examples of devices that were successfully developed are solar lamps, adjustable glasses, filtration system as well as many other devices. All of those devices were design to be low cost and accessible to any level of economical constrains.

As an engineer or a maker you must capture people stories and understand their social backgrounds, as well as doing extensive research of their society before designing something they might use. Understanding of the solution is necessary and adopting it to the local community must be done in a way where people will use the technology and will be able to maintain it. Tech must be design based on social context.

The second speaker, Dr. Ola Harrysson talked about his work and research being done with the 3D modeling machines. He mentioned the electron beam melting (EBM), as well as the Laser based process machines, the differences in their functionality and performance. In addition, Dr. Ola Harrysson discussed some of the application of the 3D modeling machines. One of the main functionalities utilized by 3D modeling is ‘Design of Implants’. Additional application that was unique to the 3D modeling is building ‘Mesh Structures’.
