Fashion being inspired by religion

Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Designers get inspiration from almost anything and the most unexpected things (Reich-Storer, 2016). Ā In The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York exhibit: Heavenly Bodies, religious symbols inspire the creativity of designers like Gianni Versace. For many years religion has been an inspiration for garments in the fashion world.

Religion has always been a part of fashion throughout history, and Gianni Versace is one designer who has displayed that. Versaceā€™s Fall 1997/98 haute couture collection shows various gold mesh dresses with cross embellish pieces on them (The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, 2018).Ā One specific dress from this collection is a gold mesh and leather dress with amber appliqued crystals placed as a cross. This collection was the last collecting Gianni Versace did and debuted before he was murdered. Gianni was always inspired by his surroundings but, he was also fascinated with ancient Greece and Rome. According to Versace (2018), his collection ā€œrevealed his appreciation of ancient Greece and Rome, Byzantine crosses, madonnas, 18thcentury court style silhouettes, and 1920s and 1930s themes of the Vienna Secession, Vionnet, and Madame Gresā€. One can see the several crosses embellished on a lot of the clothing in Versaceā€™s Fall 1997 collection.

The cross is an iconic symbol in the Christian religion. The cross is widely worn and cherished by Christians because of what it represents. The cross first symbolized the death of Jesus Christ because thatā€™s where they crucified him and killed him. People were scared to show their crosses in risk of being punished, but after Constantine became emperor he abolished any type of punishment because he believed that the cross was a symbol of the son of god (Roberts, 2011). This lead to the reinforcement of Christianity in the Byzantine Period by Constantine.

The Byzantine period was a major influence for Versace when creating this collection. During the Byzantine period the emperor Constantine reinforced Christianity not for the act of good but out of fear of the power of god (Crouch, 2017). The colors used during this time represented different meanings. Gold in the Byzantine period represented purity, royalty, and the glorious life after death (The Meaning of colors Symbols in Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance Painting, 2017).Gold can also be a representation of wealth and riches.

Gianni Versaceā€™s Fall 1997 represented how designers use the history religion to create beautiful haute couture pieces. Versaceā€™s fascination and appreciation for the past, and historical religious empires themed throughout his garments. The colors Versace used were also influential colors during the Byzantine period, they represent the purity and wealth of the empire. The religious Christian symbol like the cross also made debuts throughout his collection. The representation of the Son of God and Jesus Christ was important to the Byzantine emperor Constantine and it is style a symbolic artifact to the Christians of today. The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art New York exhibit: Heavenly Bodiescontinues to display garments that represent the history of religion and how designers used their symbols to create a theme in their garments.
