At Astoria Modern Family Dental, I was trained to be a dental assistant and participate in four-handed dentistry. I was also trained to take radiographs based on patient/ doctor needs. I also worked on patients whose treatment included that of ZOOM whitening (alongside a dentist).  Assisted in helping translate information about procedures to patients in Spanish. Along with assistant responsibilities, I was also able to expand my knowledge in dentistry doing office work. I was receptionist a few days a week when needed, aided in finding insurance information and eligibility for patients, as well as taking down information and scheduling both new and recall appointments using Dentrix.

Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens

 September 2004 to August 2005

Volunteer/ Patient Advocate

As part of a Christian Living course assignment during my senior year of high school, I was urged to participate as a volunteer in any area that I was interested in. I chose to work at Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens where I assisted the staff in the Admitting Office as well as the director at the time, Ms. Rosemarie Mitchell. I completed 6 hours a week for the entire school year and was urged to continue on to complete the summer at the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) Summer Youth Program. My duties entailed: putting patient charts together, transporting paperwork to different departments within the hospital and other small but necessary jobs. During my time there, I gained information as to how patients were assigned rooms based on their different needs. I also participated in a book drive, taking books to patients in different units to enjoy the pleasures of reading one.
Aside from doing small clerical work, I was sometimes placed in the emergency room to shadow the staff there. During the Summer Youth Program, I was also able to take on the role of a Greeter/ Patient Advocate for patients who came through the Emergency Department. I welcomed the patients and completed a short questionnaire before submitting the paperwork to the triage nurse for further assessment. At times, I would also translate for those patients who spoke Spanish. Being that I did come in contact with patients, I did receive training in “Infection control, safety and security, and privacy issues”.
