Inline Comments
The Inline Comments plugin offers a way for users to annotate text on your site. It adds commenting to the side of paragraphs and other sections of a post or page.
Enable plugin
Activate the “Inline Comments” Plugin.
Recommended Settings
1. In the left-hand side menu of Dashboard, go to Settings > Inline Comments.
2. The inline comments permissions will follow the discussion (commenting) settings for your site overall. For example, users must have a previously approved comment, or users must be logged in to leave a comment. For this reason, you don’t need to change anything in the Visibility dropdown.
3. If you would like to allow inline comments on pages, you will need to make sure that commenting is enabled for those pages in Dashboard > Pages. Hover over a page and choose Quick Edit.
4. Check the Enable Inline Replies checkbox. The plugin works together with the regular site comments at the bottom of a post or page, so either way people will have the option to reply to each another. Checking this box will make it more visually clear whether someone is commenting on the paragraph or replying to another person’s comment.
How to use
1. To leave a comment, hover your mouse over a paragraph until you see a + symbol on the top-right side of the paragraph. Click it, and you will see a comment box appear.
2. Write your comment and click Post Comment.
Paragraphs with comments will show the number of comments where the + symbol was. The number will always be visible even if not hovering the mouse over the paragraph. That way people can tell which paragraphs have comments and how many there are.
3. To comment on a paragraph that already has a comment, simply click the comment bubble to the right of the paragraph, and post your comment like usual.
4. To reply to a comment, click the number button of the paragraph and click Reply beneath the comment you’re replying to. Another comment box will appear, where you can write your reply. When you’re done, click Post Comment.
Recommended Themes
This plugin works best with themes like Hemingway, Twenty Sixteen, Twenty Seventeen, GeneratePress, Astra, and Twenty Twenty-Four. It may not work as well with some other themes. We encourage you to first try one of these so you can see the plugin is supposed to look and behave and then try with whatever theme you prefer for your site. If you find a them that looks odd, please let us know.
