Week 3 Assignments

Each week, I will ask you to do four things:
-
1/ Post an entry in your Learning Journal. Entries in your Learning Journal (LJ) will most often be focused on Free Writing or Structured Free Writing, which is Free Writing in response to a specific topic, prompt, or question. I will give you a weekly LJ assignment. Please post entries in your LJ HERE. This is a private journal that only you and your instructor can access.

2/ Complete one or more Group Assignments (GA), which will require that you contribute either a BLOG POST and/or to our course Discussion Board. These posts and discussions will be read by our entire class.

3/ Complete one to two Reading and Writing Assignments (RWA), which, unless otherwise specified, you will submit as a separate entry/entries in your Learning Journal HERE.

4/ Check in at least THREE separate times a week and respond at least ONCE to contributions by other student blog posts on the Home page of our course Web site AND to forums on the course Discussion Board
- WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENTS: DUE DATE: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 at 5PM. Monday, September 17 is a holiday and the college is closed. As a result, I will not be posting your Week 4 Assignments until Wednesday, September 19 and I will be accepting Week 3 Assignments through that same Wednesday.
- During our third week, we will doing some brainstorming and reading for the Personal Essay and reading about technology and writing.

Please spend 5 to 7 minutes free writing about how technology has altered how you write and/or why you write. Please try to include one to two specific examples in your discussion of this topic.

GROUP ASSIGNMENTS
- Group Assignment 7: Please visit www.unphotographable.com and look at the site with the goal of understanding what the site and the unphotographable project is about. Then, please write ONE to THREE unphotographable moments and publish them as BLOG POSTS on our course Web site. Finally, please respond to one or more of your classmate’s posts and consider the following: 1/ what EFFECT the fact of NOT being able to see this photograph but instead having to read about it had on your understanding of the moment that is depicted. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about this. Thanks to Professor Gold for this assignment.
- Group Assignment 8: Please read “What Is the MLA?” . After reading this, please go to the dedicated MLA/APA Discussion Board and tell us:
- 1. Whether you use MLA or APA guidelines in your discipline (a discipline is your major, e.g., Graphic Arts, Nursing, Electrical Engineering, etc.)
- 2. Whether you have any additional questions about the MLA or APA

- Please read the section entitled “A Rhetorical View of Writing,” which is included in the Web text entitled “Why Teach Digital Writing?” making sure that you read carefully, look up any words that you are unfamiliar with, and take notes. PLEASE KNOW that the Web text is not written for students, so if you are having difficulties with reading it, that is ok. Just do your best. Once you have read that specific section (please note you will have to click on it on the right hand menu), please respond to the following questions in one or more paragraphs:
1. How similar or different was your experience reading this text compared to the Bazerman? How/why was it similar or different? Please explain.
2. Please explain the key points that the authors are making.
3. Please list or explain any words or concepts included in the reading that you did not understand.
Reading and Writing Assignment 4: Thinking About the Personal Essay as Genre
Below, you will find links to several personal essays. While the genre of the personal essay is vast and broad, ALL personal essays are generally written in the first person and reflect on an individual’s identity in some way. Please choose one of the following personal essays and read it. Then, explain why you chose it and what you liked about it.
