My answer to this question is: “it depends on the instructor and on the course.” I always encourage my students to use “I” in their writing because it helps them to write in an active, as opposed to a passive, voice, e.g., “I believe” versus “It is believed”. While you should ALWAYS write exploratory and first drafts using “I,” when it comes to handing in a final draft of a paper, always check with the professor who is teaching the course to get his/her opinion on the matter. I was kind of shocked to discover just yesterday that a professor in a Library Science course at the college had informed her students to “NEVER use ‘I’ in academic writing.” There are many reasons why I disagree with that statement.
Thanks a lot Professor! I sometimes also feel that I use it too much.
Thank you Professor for letting us know about that because I do tend to agree with that. I believe it depends on what’s required and what type of essay it is. However what are some words we can use to substitute for “I” because I feel as if it gets very repetitive. Is there anything we can do to mix it up slightly or is it fine to carry on that way?
I have that same problem i just want to write “i this and I that and I this and that” would make writing so much easier!
