Week 1 through Week 3

MODULE 1:  EVALUATION, RESEARCH, ETHICS, AND PRIORITIZING NEEDS IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS

During Weeks 1 through 3, students will learn introductory information about the evaluation and research in healthcare settings, ethical frameworks for evaluating healthcare services/systems, and understanding the needs of a health care system. Students will read through the websites and view the videos that are posted below. From these activities, you should be able to define terms, provide examples, and discuss the role of evaluation and research in health care management.

It is recommended that you write notes as you review these materials because they will be helpful when completing written assignments and preparing for the online exams.  


Week 1:  Introduction to Evaluation and Research in Healthcare Settings

Student Learning Outcome(s) for this Session: Upon completion of this session’s readings/activities, students will be able to:

  1. Define and discuss the differences and similarities between evaluation, research, and monitoring.
  2. Describe how a conceptual framework can be applied to define and evaluate healthcare systems and services.
  3. Discuss the three major components of the Donabedian model.
  4. Identify aspects of healthcare quality and explain its role in delivering healthcare services and evaluating health systems.
  5. Describe how accrediting organizations employ a system to evaluate healthcare services and health systems for accreditation.

Week 2:  Overview of Ethics when Evaluating Healthcare Services/Systems (Synchronous Lecture)

Student Learning Outcome(s) for this Session: Upon completion of this sessions’ readings/activities, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive overview of health ethics.
  2. Explain the four guiding principles/frameworks of ethics in evaluating healthcare services/systems.
  3. Explain the informed consenting process and the purpose of conducting risk-benefit assessments.
  4. Discuss ethical issues in healthcare and the role of the institutional review board.
  5. Describe the role of healthcare enforcement agencies in ethical situations.
  6. Define special populations in the U.S.
  7. Describe how healthcare programs for special populations fit into the U.S. healthcare system as a whole.
  8. Describe the importance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  9. Recall the role of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, correctional health programs, and the Veterans Administration in supporting the health needs of special populations

Week 3:  Understanding and Prioritizing the Needs of a Health Care System

Student Learning Outcome(s) for this Session: Upon completion of this session’s readings/activities, students will be able to:

  1. Define community health needs assessment.
  2. Discuss how needs assessment program assesses the priority health needs of a community.
  3. Define health equity and health care access in the context of chronic disease management.
  4. Discuss how to navigate access to resources in communities.
  5. Discuss how to develop a logic model for program/policy evaluation.
