This essay by the comic memoirist David Seders is published in the New Yorker and is one of his most well known essays, an excerpt from his book Santaland Diaries. I like to teach David Sedaris because he’s also a life long diarist (we talk about journalling and daily writing practices a lot in this class).
His book Theft by Finding features his diaries from 1977-2002. He even has an app about his diary entries.
