Tips on Reciting from Poetry Out Loud offers a comprehensive list of areas to focus on when reciting poems out loud. This resource is designed specifically for poetry, but the ideas can applied for all genres. Each category also includes examples.
Remember, you are not expected to be an expert reader! This resource is designed for those who wish to compete, and we are not competing. Our main focus in this class will be on enjoying the process of reading. Keep an open mind. Some students enjoy this experience more than others, and I’ve had students who are surprised by how much they liked the experience after they were finished.
The main areas of concentration in this resource include:
- Physical Presence
- Voice and Articulation
- Dramatic Appropriateness
- Evidence of Understanding (the work being recited)
- Overall Effect and Connection with the Audience
