This New York Times story by Alyssa Lukpat tells how Dillon Heilburg wrote a book and put it in the library shelves. “An 8 Year Old Wrote a Book and Hid It On the Library Shelf. It’s a Hit.”
From the article:
“The book, “The Adventures of Dillon Helbig’s Crismis” by the author “Dillon His Self,” had drawn so much attention by the end of January that 56 people were on the waiting list to check it out, said Alex Hartman, the manager of the library branch”.
I include it here because it is a good story, but also because it illustrates how the creative impulse can happen and be cultivated confidently at any time. Too often new writers think, “I can’t do this” or “I’m just not creative” or “I have nothing to say.” But we do. It’s trusting the instinct that’s important. Children and young people often have this. Our job in this class is to rekindle the desire and capability if self-doubt gets in the way and to trust ourself and our deeper truths and instincts and simply follow them without judging them.
