Over the course of this semester, I had very positive experiences using and placing the Arestin sites. I had placed the Arestin for three separate patients, all of whom had active periodontal disease Type II-III, moderate bleeding upon probing, and radiographic bone loss greater than 30%. The pocket depths in which the Arestin was placed ranged between 5-6mm pocket depths. The patients all had extremely positive patient acceptance towards this treatment, even with the instruction that treatment outcomes would not be guaranteed. These patients were between the ages of 40-65 years old, 2 males, 1 female, and all non-smokers. They were pleased with the results and the outcomes. Upon evaluation, no patient reported any sign of discomfort, pain, or sensitivity. They reported good compliance of post-operative instructions. Of the 8 sites placed, only one site showed no change. The rest of the 7 sites showed tremendous improvement in bone-growth and reduction of pocket depths ranging from 1-3mm. Placed on both lingual and buccal surfaces, the gingiva looked healthy, with improvements of less inflammation and marginal redness. These patients will have another follow up in the next 3-4 months.
