Overview

Plans, Sections, and Elevations are the most basic drawings for studying buildings, giving clear primary information about the nature of the building.

For the Module 1 drawing assignment, we will be using the Federal Hall building in lower Manhattan as a case study. We will analyze together as a class while developing a detailed set of architectural drawings.

1. Federal Hall Floor Plan – plans indicate the program layout and egress. The analysis of the geometry provides a hierarchy to the building components to be studied for this and subsequent modules.

2. Federal Hall Longitudinal Section – building sections are critical drawings for understanding the relationship between program spaces, the structure, and the building form. The logic behind the structural configuration and thickness at the exterior walls, floors, and roofs help inform the analysis for the subsequent modules.

3. Federal Hall South Elevation – elevations are constructed using sections as the guide and projection of critical elements fordeveloping the elevation.

These drawings must be coordinated carefully with each other, and developed with clear reference lines (structural grid lines and key elevation/datum lines).

Refer to the ARCH 1231 Course Hub Module 1 Overview for reference.

Due Date(s)

Final Module 1 drawings will be due on Week 5 or as directed by Professor.

Instructions

NOTE: All drawings to be 3/32″=1′-0″ on 17″x24″ sheets unless otherwise agreed with Professor.

Final Deliverables:

  • Federal Hall First Floor Plan Geometry Diagram
  • Federal Hall First Floor Plan
  • Federal Hall Longitudinal Section
  • Federal Hall South Elevation

Follow the following steps:

  1. Develop the geometry diagram by clearly identifying the X and Y axis, verify the symmetry of the floor plan, verify the central rotunda, and identify the egress corridors/stair cores
  2. Using a vellum or bond sheet to create the floor plan to scale. Using as many dimensions from the floor plan as possible to help draft the drawings to scale
  3. Complete each of these drawings. Scan with CamScanner app or flatbed scanner and format per course file formatting naming guidelines (found here)
  4. Submit all formatted files to the submission share folder or email (however, it must be presented in class)
