Last project

My last project of the internship was a big project that contains twelve pages. This project was a menu book project. The client provided us with the other menu of another location of restaurant, but then I need to make some changes of the client wants. For examples, the price, some items that has to be deleted and add. I was spending about three days of my internship time to completed this project. However, I think it was worth it, because my supervisor and the client were like my work very much.

I gained so much experience after I had done so many menu design of my internship. In addition, most of the time I was using InDesign on the projects; therefore, I had improved my InDesign skill.

Following Direction

Redesign logo was part of my job in the internship. My supervisor has many good relationship clients that always want her to do design for them; in this case she gave me two logos that from two different café, and both of them wanted to have some changes in their old logos. Before I started to do the new logos, my supervisor already gave me some art direction and she asked me to follow her idea to do edited. Since, we had discussed all the details of the improvements; therefore, I finished these two different logos easily and spend less time than before. In addition, the improvements that my supervisor wanted me to do were made all the fonts larger and change some color.

Following direction was important. Because it could make everything easy to finished, also the outcomes were the clients expect to have.

Agreement and Communication is Very Important

Communication was very important during the internship. One of my tasks of the internship was designing the waffle board and directional waffle board for a restaurant called Delmonico Waffles. In addition, this was a small project, because the client wants to have a simple looking waffle board. However, the most important thing about this job was a waffle image. Before I started this project, supervisor and I was doing some research together online and tried to find some good waffles images to use, as a result, we couldn’t find any. But then, my supervisor said to me I need to spend sometime on research because there were not many good images in Google. Furthermore, I was spending almost 2 hours to find a decent image of waffle. Then I asked my supervisor to take a look at the images that I had fond, then she choose the one she like and asked me to start to do the design of the waffle board. Once I finished this project, my supervisor sends the file to the client, but she also called the client by phone to asked the client about if they might want to make some changes of the waffle board. During their conversation, I know the client didn’t like the waffle image that I used on the board. However, my supervisor was strongly disagree with the client; therefore, she convinces the client by gave out her art direction and the professional design skill to let the client know why we used this image. Finally, the client agrees with us and proves to print of this project.

After finished this project, I learned only have the design skill was not enough. Because most of the time we have to deliver our idea to the clients or the audience, so that they will have a sense about the art direction and be able to understand the whole concept.

A job that demands great patience

During the internship, I learned about not only design but also be patience. I was working on a project for Bread Factory since in October, but the client wasn’t kept in touch with my supervisor; therefore, we both had to wait for their feedback about my design to do further improvement.

This was not a complex project. Because my supervisor already gives me a lot of information about what they want to have on each big menu board. As a consequence of this, my job was redesigned the menu board and make it as simple to read for the client. I was spending two days to finish twelve big menu boards of this project. And my supervisor likes what I did on the board. However, we didn’t hear from the Bread Factory over a month after my supervisor sends all the PDF to them. Moreover, in this case, my supervisor was not only taught me how to handle a big project but also during the time of work we need to have a great patience of waiting. However, the only thing that me and my supervisor could do was sending some email to remind them about this job.

Duplicate the menu

During the internship, I have learned not only about design but also how to handle other people’s work. My supervisor assigned me to take care of my co-worker’s work because she took a week off. This project was a duplicate menu for a restaurant called Bruno’s. My supervisor only has the pdf file for menu, however, she wants me to duplicate it so then we can make changes to the menu, for examples: price, dish est.

bruno's 1st avenue Oct 2013 11 x 17.qxd_Page_2bruno's 1st avenue Oct 2013 11 x 17.qxd_Page_1

Before I started being in charge of this project, my co-worker already finished the first part of the menu, but the menu has eight parts, which mean I had to do the other seven parts. I first looked up at the menu and think about how to fit the entire dishes in this 11’’X17’’ document with the half inch wide fold line. Because this menu has many dishes, but they wanted to keep it as a small take out menu; therefore I had to make the font size smaller and the leading smaller as well. First of all, I copy the text from the pdf file, and then adjusted all the name of the dishes as size 10pt as well as the leading, but the description of the dishes as size 9pt; as a result all the text could be fit on the pages. Second, I had to fix the image in the first part, which was the most difficult part of this project. When I was copying the image, I first open it in Photoshop then turn the color mode into cmyk, also set up as 300 high resolutions. But the image has the weird background, so I had to use the magic wand tool to select the area that I don’t want and delete it. However, the magic wand tool didn’t pick up the area cause of the unwanted background was gray color; therefore I had to use the lasso tool to draw the oval around the area that I wanted, then deleted the background.

This project was taking me 6hrs to finished. Because I wanted to made this menu exactly like the one of the pdf file, which my supervisor wanted it to be. After finished editing, I asked my supervisor to take a look, and she was very surprised and very happy that I only used a few hours to finished the menu. In addition, she loves the font size, leading and the most difficult part, which was the tabs. After finished this project, I learned many things, just like the menu even though it looks like very easy to do, but there has so many little detail that needs me to handle and fix it.

Postcard

During the internship most likely my works were for restaurant and deli store; as a result, I had to do many menu and postcard. In this case, my supervisor assigned me to do a postcard for the restaurant called Benvenuto, which located in Greenwich Street.

She first shared all the files that I might need in dropbox, and then I had to follow her instruction for the front of the postcard because she already designed the front of the postcard, but it was in vertical, and she wants me to redesign the postcard in horizontal. Frist of all, I created a new document of the postcard then I took the images of the old version adjusted it into the new one. Furthermore, I tried to keep the same style when I designed the back; therefore, I keep the yellow stripe in the middle and the red stripe at the bottom. Also, I found some good food images and put it in the middle of the postcard with the red stroke box just like the images in the front. Before designing this project, my supervisor has discussed with the client; as a result, they want to promote the catering of café at the back of the postcard. Therefore, I looked up their website then found something about their catering and take it to the back. Nevertheless, I used the red square box to emphasize the ten percent off of the online order.

Photoshop and Illustrator work

This week was the first time to use Photoshop and Illustrator in my internship. My supervisor was not only president of Calling of Graphics, but also a president of South Pacific; therefore, she assigned me to do work for her own project, because this work was going to use in music performance for South Pacific.

The template of this stage boards was very large. In this project, I had to use Photoshop to cut out the flowers make it as high-resolution files, then import it into Illustrator to place it into the grass. While I was doing this project, I always save the flowers images as cmyk and high resolution first; therefore, when my supervisor prints out this large board the quality won’t pixelate. In addition, after finished this project the file was saving so slowly, in other words, the file was too large and took too much time to open. With that being said, I had to reduce the flowers images size and replaced again in the Illustrator file.

After finished the project, my supervisor was very satisfied with the outcome. Nonetheless, it makes me reflect myself should always check the file size before saving, so it won’t take any extra time to redo the project.

Web coding

This week was a struggle week. My supervisor was asking me to create a website for her company because the other co-worker was doing the postcard for her then she wants to have a website. I was told my supervisor I’m not very good at web coding. But then she looked up my website and said she wants the website similar to mine because she thinks my web page was simple and clean.

Screen Shot 2015-10-31 at 5.27.22 PM

I found my old html and css files in my laptop then tried to figure out how to change it to become a new one. First of all, I spend a little time to edit the company logo because it has a slight shadow behind the letters and it was faded out a bit. Second, I tried to changes on the tapnav of the website as well as the position, but it took me 1 or 2 hours to finished. In addition, I had to remind myself how to make it work, since my co-worker and supervisor don’t know how to make a website, therefore, they couldn’t give me any advice. Furthermore, I spend two days in web coding, but then my supervisor think to create a website has to spend a lot of time, but then she told me to hold on for the website and assign me to further design work.

It was good experience to create a website in my internship. This makes me think I have to learn and explore more about web design because nowadays many people are focusing on internet, so as a designer has a good skill or technique in web design is very helpful.

First Task

My first task in this internship was redesigning a menu. The first day of my internship, my supervisor was very nice and organized the desk for me, because one of the computers was not working; therefore, I had to bring my own laptop to work. After settling down, my supervisor asked me to redesign the restaurant menu for the company called Soul Spot. She first created a drop box shared folder for me and uploaded the old version files, and told me the client wants to resize the menu document, because the client didn’t want a two folds menu, so then I have to turned it into three folds menu.

Two Folds menu (inside 2nd and 3rd pages)

After I created a new document for this menu, I was thinking about how could I organize it well. First of all, my supervisor want to kept all the same fonts and therefore, it limited the typeface options of the project. In addition, I kept the front page of the menu then organized the soup and beverages into two pages, and then I separated the lunch menu and dinner menu in two different pages, but then combined the lunch and dinner special into one page.

I am an intern at ‘Calling All Graphics’, which is a private in-house company located in Brooklyn. ‘Calling All Graphics’ was founded in 2000 and currently has three employees: Marla Gotay, the president, Rida, who helps Marla to do billing and mailing, and Myles, who helps printing and delivering the final pieces to the customers. The company primarily creates print materials such as: menus, menu boards, signage, flyers, business cards, t-shirts and much more. Many of the clients are owners of the deli stores, restaurants and cafĂ©s; therefore, many of the jobs of this company handles are menus, dish special posters or menu boards. In addition, whenever the clients want to change the look of their menu or add additional special menu or poster, they will call or send email to my supervisor Marla, then she will assign the jobs with notes written on the paper about what are the changes that the clients want to make of the jobs and also the idea of the jobs. As a result, most of my tasks in this internship are modify the menu or redesign the menu board and poster. After I’ve completed the tasks, the supervisor will look over and add any additional changes if necessary, then email to the clients and wait for them take and look and reply afterward.
