3. Due Wed 7/22, 7p (Midterm and Essay 1 Feedback)

Due Wed 7/22, 7p

For Wednesday, I want you to do two things: (A) take the midterm exam (instructions below; don’t worry: you will be allowed to revise this test for a re-grade) and (B) read and write feedback on 5 classmates’ Essay 1s.

Mini-Lesson: TOPIC v. THESIS
Last week, we worked on noticing the THESIS of Kaba’s and Meares’ texts.  Remember: a thesis is a debate-able statement (often a writer’s “opinion”) about a topic.  A THESIS is not the same as a TOPIC.  A topic is simply the main idea or content of a text; a thesis is the writer’s opinion or point of view ABOUT the topic.  For instance, in both Kaba’s and Meares’ texts that we read last week, the topic is police brutality and racism.  Kaba’s thesis is her opinion about this topic: what she thinks should be done about racist police brutality (she thinks that we should defund and get rid of police departments).  Make sense?  OK, now you’re ready for the midterm (below).

A) Midterm Exam. This is a test devised and required by the Summer Program. As such, it is slightly different than the assignments I’ve given so far (which will nevertheless have prepared you well for it. The instructions are simple: read an article and identify the author, title, topic, thesis, and the reasons/details supporting the thesis.  Then write a short summary of the article, including therein your response to the article (whether you agree or disagree with it and why).

 15% of final grade

The article I want you to read and do your exam on is:

Larry Elder, “Where’s Black Lives Matter When You Need Them?”

As always, write your work in a Google Doc and save to your Google Drive folder for the course, then paste your work as a comment below, responding to this post.  Format your exam as follows:

Name
Author:
Title:
Topic:
Thesis:
Reasons/Details Supporting Thesis:

Summary (1 paragraph, including all of the above as well as your response to the article—whether you disagree/agree with it and why)

B) Go to Essay 1 Feedback and read 5 classmates’ essays. Respond to each writer’s post with a comment containing feedback (I repeat: do NOT respond to this post with your feedback—respond to each writer’s post individually; see below for requirements). Please choose classmates who have few-to-no comments from other classmates.

Please reply to your classmate’s post with a comment containing…
1 specific sentence you admire (and an explanation of why you like it) and…
1 specific suggestion for revision (and an explanation of how this should be fixed).

10% of final grade (along with Essay 2 feedback you will give next week)

  1. Name: Paulina Vega
    Author: Larry Elder
Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?
Topic: Recent killings of Black people
Thesis: Elder believes that there is no supportive data for race based police brutality against black people.

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” by Larry Elder, he believes that there is no race based police brutality against black people due to unsupported data. Elder (2020) states, “There is no epidemic of racist cops killing black suspects. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, police killings of blacks declined almost 80% from the late ’60s through the 2010s, while police killings of whites have flatlined.” This quote is demonstrating that there is not a widespread of racist police occurring in a community at a particular time. He expresses a counter argument on the concept of race based police brutality against black people by mentioning a decline of 80% of police killing black people. Elder also states, “In recent years, the police have averaged killing about 1,000 Americans per year. Of that number, half are white and one-quarter are black, with the race of remaining suspects of another race or unknown. Of the approximately 1,000 killed by cops, less than 4% involve a white officer and an unarmed black man.” Elder demonstrates statistical data that expresses more killings of white than black. He also states “the police killed a little more than 200 blacks, and nearly all of them had a weapon or violently resisted arrest.” Elder reveals that a small percentage of unarmed black men are killed by white officers compared to an armed and violent black man killed by white officers.

    1. Great summary Paulina!!
What I admired about your summary is that you explained every piece of evidence that supports why Elder sticks with his belief. Very thorough!! I don’t see where you need to revise anything, you did a good job.

      1. Jada,
Glad you read and responded to some classmates’ midterms; however, I want you to read and respond to classmates’ ESSAY 1 (not their midterms). Also, please be more specific about a sentence or paragraph you liked and something you’d suggest revising. I know you can do this!
        M

    2. Nice! A couple revisions to make to bring the grade up on this:

–Can you provide more context for your mention of the “80% decline” you mention in your own sentence? You could say something like an “80% decline in police killings of black people in the last 50-60 years”

–Please provide your own response to the article, perhaps in a separate paragraph. What do you agree/disagree with in this article—and why?

  2. Shalamar Mercharles

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” The author Larry Elder discusses the topic of black lives matter, and police brutality against blacks. The opinion he has is that,There is no such thing as police brutality against black people. There are way more reasons and causes why and how black people are Dying, and there is nothing to support the fact that police are killing off black people . Larry says “Finally, why didn’t President Barack Obama’s administration deal with this alleged systemic, structural or institutional police brutality against blacks”he says allegedly which means he doesn’t believe it and thinks it fake and he asks why didn’t Obama do anything about it.i disagree with his opinion. I think there is a lot of police brutality towards blacks. I feel like people like him who don’t see it, is the reason it can’t get better.

    1. Great point you have Shalamar. What I would suggest you do next time is go over your response . There’s little bits of errors. However, I like your how you see that Elder doesn’t quite understand how there’s a lot of police brutality towards blacks.

    2. Thank you Shalamar. You have captured the big picture of Elder’s thesis well; however, here are some thoughts for revision to bring the grade up on this:

–Please discuss the statistics Elder uses in his article as evidence to support his thesis. What do they show/suggest? What are some problems with them?

–Watch out for comma and punctuation errors. You may find you can use periods, question marks, and other punctuation where you currently have commas. I suggest reviewing info here for help with correcting these grammar/punctuation issues:

      https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/punctuation/punctuation/index.html

–Please more your own response to the article to a separate paragraph and expand on your reasons for disagreeing with Elder. What do you agree/disagree with in this article—and why?

    Midterm exam

    Author: Larry Elder

Title:Larry Elder, “Where’s Black Lives Matter When You Need Them?”

Topic: black lives matter and politics

Thesis:he thinks that we are protesting for the wrong reason, and police brutality is just an excuse for black people to act crazy.

Reasons/Details Supporting Thesis: he states that many businesses have been set on fire, attacked and looted,he also states that more white american get killed by police officers than black americans.

In the article Larry Elder, “Where’s Black Lives Matter When You Need Them?”Larry Elder’s main topics are politics and BLM. I feel like he feels like we are using this time where black people who are dying to destroy business and have fun. I do feel like that may be true for some people but others want peace, others want to show how the police officers are making them feel. Also I notice that it ‘ s not only black american protesting but its always white americans. I feel like they can see us struggling and dying and it’s not right. Larry also discusses that more white american get killed by cops more than black americans. That may be true but I feel like they wouldn’t hesitate to kill us first than a white american. I saw so much news where a cop is in a situation where they are talking to a white man who has a gun pointed at them and only would shoot when he started running to them. But if that was a black man he would have been shot right away without any communication at all. I saw many young black mens get shot just for taking out their license… The cops are afraid of us so what makes you think they wouldn’t kill us faster than any white man. That is why people are protesting because they see how we get treated differently than the rest. So I disagree with Larry’s thesis.

    1. I totally agree with the examples and statements you’ve made Kenyah. You’ve made huge points that Elder should be understanding and take into consideration especially as a black man.

    2. Thanks, Kenyah. You have captured the big picture of Elder’s thesis well in your notes; however, here are some thoughts for revision to bring the grade up on this:

–Your summary paragraph currently consists mostly of sentences that put your response first. Please write your summary of Elder’s points first (which you have in your notes) as its own paragraph, BEFORE you introduce your responses. You want to show that you understand what he’s saying BEFORE you disagree with it. And it’s clear to me from your notes that you do understand most of his argument; you just have to put these notes into complete sentences forming a paragraph.

–Follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

–Please discuss the statistics Elder uses in his article as evidence to support his thesis. What do they show/suggest? What are some problems with them?

–Your response is powerful. Thank you.

These:Police brutality. They are killing people no matter what is there ethnicity. They shouldn’t killing people for any Crime, government didn’t give them rights to kill people.

I have a evidence to prove my these is right,A police officer is 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.” Last year, according to The Washington Post, the police killed nine unarmed blacks. They killed 19 unarmed whites.

I’m agree that police brutality because they are killing all kinds of people.how does anyone die in police custody? If police are doing there jobs why they kill 1000 people a year?Government didn’t give them any rights to kill victims.

    1. Thanks, Alfaj;
In your notes you have captured the big picture of Elder’s thesis well; however, here are some thoughts for revision to bring the grade up on this:

–Before discussing your “thesis” and response to Elder’s article, please make a paragraph of 4-5 sentences that focuses on summarizing Elder’s thesis and the main points from his article.

–Follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter When You Need Them?
Topic: Recent Killing og Blcak People
Do you believe that everyone in this world has equal rights?. In the article “Larry Elder: Where’s Black Lives Matter When You Need Them?” by Larry Elder, the author writes about Every year police killed 13% black people. Police brutality isn’t stopped anymore. They just kill people. If people are doing something wrong they should arrest them, not killing them. If the recent killing by the police was racially motivated there would absolutely be hate crime enhancement, which there wasn’t. The guy had fentanyl in his system enough to prove he was high at the time of arrest, fentanyl suppresses your respiratory system it’s what kills a from an overdose. I suspect that had major part in George’s death, putting a knee on someone’s neck is common practice for the police, it’s a completely messed up way to secure a human but it doesn’t kill them. The guy doesn’t deserve to be a police officer. This quote shows the reason for police brutality. We don’t allow them any more to kill people. I agree with the police brutality. Because there is nothing right about killing people or victims.

    1. Thanks, Lubna. You have Elder’s topic right, but I’m not clear on what you think his thesis is.

Here are some thoughts for revision to bring the grade up on this:

–Before discussing your “thesis” and response to Elder’s article, please make a paragraph of 4-5 sentences that focuses on summarizing Elder’s thesis and the main points from his article.

–Follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…
–You don’t need to begin your summary with a question.

–Throughout your summary, refer to the article content by beginning sentences with a signal phrase such as:
      Elder points out that…
      Elder believes that…
      Elder thinks…
      Elder writes….

–Please discuss the statistics Elder cites as well as his concern about black businesses. These are key parts of his argument.

–Please more your own response to the article to a separate paragraph and expand on your reasons for disagreeing with Elder. What do you agree/disagree with in this article—and why?

  6. Name: where’s Black Lives Matter When You Need Them
    Author: Larry Elder
Topic: The topic of this article is based on statistics on data-based from 1960 to 2010s to current today, informing the reasons to prove with studies that there is no finding of systemic abuse of black suspects by officers.
Thesis: Larry Elder thesis is proving his point of view of the Black Lives Matter movement on there not much of a reason for protesting because of the information he shared with informative from Centers For Disease Control And Prevention on percentages difference of death of Black citizens and percentages of Whites citizens reason for their deaths. In other words proving in the article where he states, “how could one, with a straight face, argue that resident blacks suffer from institutional racism? “ .He also points out that Minneapolis Mayor and government are blacks so he asks where is the racism that our communities are addressing. Basically stating there isn’t racism against black citizens with cops, in his opinion. As to where he comes in and points out that even our president was black and if this was an issue before, how is it that even our black president did not solve the problem where we stand today and still going on so he says this is not about racism. “Finally, why didn’t President Barack Obama’s administration deal with this alleged systemic, structural or institutional police brutality against blacks in his eight years in office? Meanwhile, over Memorial Day weekend in Obama’s adopted hometown of Chicago, 10 people were killed and 49 were shot. In a city where roughly one-third of the population is black, 70% of the city’s homicide victims, according to the Chicago Police Department, are black.” I disagree with this article” Where Black Lives Matter When you Need Them “ from Larry Elder because it’s not just racism it’s the fact on how policing has abuse their power on our citizens and how we are protesting for justice to quit the wrong empowerment that police perform and its been getting worse and as I said it other context that this has been a ongoing issue with police brutality so in others words it does involve racism because police use mistreating people to their will they choose who they want to treat in orderly fashion, so yea it’s not ok that whites are treated fairly and meanwhile blacks are mistreated or no respect ,but yes I will address that there are many in our community that don’t follow and don’t like to cooperate with police and that’s where we need to come together as one and fix the brutality against police with educating them better training and our community to be better with cooperating with one another and maybe will be less killing less mistreating and we all start to treat each other equally.

    1. Steph, thanks for this.

  7. Name: Maria Fuentes
    Author: Lary Elder
Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?
    Topic :Killing of balck people
Thesis: The author thinks black lives are no such thing, he doesn’t believe in anything that is going on.

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” by Lary Elder writes about the story of a black american who was basically killed by a cop. People are saying that this is considered as racism because the guy didn’t do anything which was true. There have been many protests all over the states. They are saying that there was no epidemic of a racist cop killing suspect in the past few years but there was a big number of non-hispanic blacks that was eight times more to be a homicide. According to the text,”Of the approximately 1,000 killed by cops, less than 4% involve a white officer and an unarmed black man.” The author basically is saying that all of that police brutally with racism is not true. I disagree with this because from all the protests you can tell this was a serious issue. Not all may agree with this because everyone has different opinions but this is something to think about deeply.

    1. Nice work with your quotation, Maria. Let’s work on making some of these sentences a bit more clear though. Here’s some suggestions:

–CAREFULLY Follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

  8. Name: Claudio Espinoza

    Author: Larry Elder

Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?

Topic: Black Lives Matter and Politics

Thesis: Larry Elder thesis is proving his point of view of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” by Larry Elder,Elder discusses the topic of black lives matter, and police brutality against blacks. He thinks there is no police brutality against black people, he thinks there are other reason why black people are dying for example he states “ The No. 1 reason for death, preventable or otherwise for young black men, is homicide, almost always at the hands of another young black man. In 2018, there were approximately 7,400 black homicide victims, more than half of the nation’s total number of homicides.”Larry Elder is trying to explain that black people don’t die because of police brutality they die over other stuff too. That is what Elders is trying to say. Well i think there is a lot of police brutality towards black people. Thats what i think.

    1. Claudio, good to read you. You nailed the topic; be more specific in your description of Elder’s thesis though: his thesis IS his point-of-view, but you don’t say what this is. Say it.

Here’s some other suggestions for improving this:

–CAREFULLY Follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

  9. Lina Idris
    Author: Larry Elder
Title: “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?”
    Topic: Black Lives Matter
Thesis: There is no supporting evidence of racist cops
According the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” by Larry Elder, he states that there is no evidence of racist cops. Elder mentions “ later a cop identified as Derek chavuin placed his knee on George Floyd’s neck for almost 9 minutes while Floyd’s there handcuffed. “The police ignored speech by Floyd’s saying I can’t breathe” Which shows how law enforcement really do not respect race. Elder also mentions that more police officers are killed in the line of duty than unarmed black suspects. Throughout the article Elder mentions that there is no racism towards blacks and that there are more whites killed by police than blacks. He also goes on to mention that most blacks killed by police officers is due to them being armed or resist arrest. I believe there is racism based on stereotypes. The reason for the movement is to establish equality in treatment because when a stereotype is attached to a specific race this may result in an individual becoming prejudice and start acting on their misconceived options.
I believe justice needs to be established and we all need the same rights and equality in communities.

    1. Great work in the first part of this exam, Lina—you really nailed the topic and thesis of Elder’s article.
      Some suggestions for improving this:

–CAREFULLY follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

–Please include a bit more on the statistics Elder cites as well as his concern about black businesses. These are key parts of his argument.

  10. Name: Roman Matlala

    Author: Larry Elder

Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?

    Topic: Police Brutality

Thesis: The author believes there is no epidemic of racist cops killing black suspects

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” by Larry Elder the topic of police brutality is brought up where the author talks about how black people aren’t being brutalized by white officers. Larry Elder thinks that black people aren’t dying to racist cops, then proceeds to compare the victims of police officers in the past. “There is no epidemic of racist cops killing black suspects. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Police killings of black declined almost 80% from the late ‘60s through the 2010s, while police killings of whites have flatlined.” This shows that the author is acting like nothing is going on with police officers and unarmed black people, Instead he thinks white people have it worse when it comes to police victims. “In recent years, The police have averaged killing about 1,000 Americans per year. Of that number, half are white and one-quarter are black, with the race of remaining suspects of another race or unknown.” This proves that Larry Elder doesn’t believe there is an epidemic of racist cops killing black suspects.

    1. Good work in the first part of this exam, Roman—you’ve concisely summed up Elder’s topic and thesis.

Now, as for stuff to improve here, check out the following:

–CAREFULLY follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

–Throughout your summary, refer to the article content by beginning sentences with a signal phrase such as:

      Elder writes….

–Please discuss the statistics Elder cites as well as his concern about black businesses. These are key parts of his argument.

–Please develop and move your own response to the article to a separate paragraph and expand on your reasons for disagreeing with Elder. What do you agree/disagree with in this article—and why?

  11. Aldo Pena

Author: The author of the article is Larry Elder who is well known for Political views and his media career.

Title: The title of the article is Larry Elder: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?

Topic: The topic of this article is on the 4 officers who were fired with the killing of George Floyd which sparked an uproar throughout the nation and made many people upset and become tired of the racist intent behind officers towards the black community that has been occurring for a while now.

Thesis: The thesis of this article is that there is no systemic abuse of black people by the cops, and that data continues to prove this as the police killings of blacks has been in decline since the 60s by almost 80 percent.

Reasons/Details Supporting Thesis: According to Larry Lewis’ article in 2018 there were about 7,400 black homicide victims, which is more than half of the nation’s total number of homicides. With blacks being 13 percent of the US population, of that number police only killed around 200 blacks and nearly all of them had a weapon or violently resisted arrest.

In the article written by Larry Elder titled Where’s black lives matter when you need them? The author speaks on his opinion with recent events and all of the protests that have been occurring. Larry goes on about how white people are killed by cops more than black people and was pointing out many points in what data says about the situation. He makes many good points such as how since the 60s the rate in which black men have been killed by cops have drastically dropped since then, and how in 2018 alone 200 out of 7,400 blacks were killed by cops. The other 7,200 were killed by black on black violence. As opposing as this article may sound I believe he made some very good points although i still believe something must be done about the systemic racial issues that continue to occur in society.

    Text Re post***

    1. Aldo,
Great work on describing Elder’s thesis and Elder himself; see if you can be a bit more concise in your description of the topic–it needn’t be so long. But this isn’t a huge thing—check out the following things to improve:

–CAREFULLY follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

–Throughout your summary, refer to the article content by beginning sentences with a signal phrase such as:
      Elder points out that…
      Elder believes that…
      Elder thinks…
      Elder writes….

–In your summary paragraph, please discuss Elder’s concern about black businesses. This is a key part of his argument.

–Please develop and move your own response to the article to a separate paragraph and expand on your reasons for disagreeing with Elder. What do you agree/disagree with in this article—and why?

    Author: Larry Elder
Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?
    Topic:black life’s matter?
Thesis:There is no epidemic of racist cops killing black suspects.
Reasons/Details Supporting Thesis: uses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to show “police killings of blacks declined almost 80% from the late ’60s through the 2010s”.

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” The author Larry Elder believes that the outbreak of racist cops killing black suspects shouldn’t be anything to worry about because police killing has declined since the late 60’s by almost 80 percent.larry elder says “The No. 1 reason for death, preventable or otherwise for young black men, is homicide, almost always at the hands of another young black man”.i believe larry elder says this is because if black lives really mattered they would of focus on the killing that are happening in the black community.i agree with this but lary starts off talking about the george floyd situation then goes off talking about death rates and percentages of how police killing of black people went down from the 60’s by 80 percent. Larry also brought up that members of politics are black which is irrelevant to the situation,it shouldn’t matter who or what is at that position .The reason why I would disagree with Larry Elder is if black lives really matters why are killing and arrest from police being changed.why is there an extra charge or a cover up of a situation,I’m sure there are other situations similar to george floyd that happen but it just wasn’t made public, and the officer got away with it.

    1. Great, concise descriptions of Elder’s topic and thesis, Daniel. Here’s some suggestions for improving this:

–CAREFULLY follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

–Throughout your summary, refer to the article content by beginning sentences with a signal phrase involving the author’s last name, such as:

  13. Name: Atta Tariq
    Author: Larry Elder
Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?
Topic: Black Lives Matter, George Floyd.
Thesis: Larry Elder talks about George Floyd and what caused his death. Which was a knee to his neck for 9 minutes after Floyd repeating many times he cannot breathe. He brings in data stating that “Recent studies not only find no systemic abuse of black suspects by the cops, but if anything, cops are more hesitant, more reluctant, to use deadly force against a black suspect than against a white suspect.” Basically trying to say that the cops are scared to use weapons against black folks and shows statistics as well. He also mentions that the majority of white young men’s death causes are accidents and for young black men it is homicide. He tries to also tell us that not all cops are bad.
Reasons/Details supporting Thesis: Larry mentions this in his article: “The No. 1 cause of preventable death for young white men is accidents, such as car accidents and drownings. The No. 1 reason for death, preventable or otherwise for young black men, is homicide, almost always at the hands of another young black man. In 2018, there were approximately 7,400 black homicide victims, more than half of the nation’s total number of homicides, while the black population is 13% of the U.S. total.” He also says that “the protests are about the alleged epidemic of widespread and race-based police brutality against blacks and the lack of confidence, in the case of Floyd, that justice will be done.”

    Summary:

In the article “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them?” written by Larry Elder. He talks about the incident which has recently taken place about four cops killing a black man named “George Floyd”. Floyd kept saying “I can’t breathe” but cops didn’t listen and after an hour, he was pronounced dead. People protested in which businesses were looted and burnt out. There were also charges against cops. I agree with the author that all cops are not bad. It’s in our heads and judging people by their color. We need to change our minds. Crime is everywhere, it doesn’t mean we only suspect specific race just because of their color. We can’t judge each cop over one cop who messed up really bad. But, this incident made every cop look bad. The trust is gone for the citizens. People do not feel safe.

    1. Atta,
Great work in your notes on the Supporting Reasons/Details of Elder’s article. Careful with how you present his thesis, though. His thesis isn’t about George Floyd; he’s arguing, instead, that Black Lives Matter has exaggerated the racism of American police and that the protests have been a threat to black-owned businesses (among other things). Please revise your summary to reflect this and also attend to the following:

–CAREFULLY follow the instructions I gave previously (Assignment 1) and in the syllabus for introducing titles and author names at the beginning of your summary: In “Title,” Author Name discusses [describe topic]…

–Throughout your summary, refer to the article content by beginning sentences with a signal phrase involving the author’s last name, such as:

  14. Name: Kavron Ford
    Author: Larry Elder
Title: Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them ?
Topic: The topic of this article is if Black lives really matter
Thesis: The thesis is Larry Elder doesn’t really believe in Black lives Matter and feels the media is lying.
Reasons/Details Supporting Thesis: He explains his direct viewpoint of The BLM movement and how false he feels it is.

In the article Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them by Larrry Elder, he argued against the black lives matter movement explaining that police officers are not the biggest threat to black lives and there is no “Systematic abuse of black suspects by the cops”basically saying that all of the videos and pictures on the internet are fake because it isn’t on any official documents. I disagree with Larry Elder but understand his facts on the amount of people that were killed and if they were black or not, my reasoning is that all because there isn’t any reports about incidents with black suspects doesn’t mean there isn’t any abuse most incidents are not reported unless on a picture or footage getting on social media which is one of the best evidence finders it doesn’t always bring out a clear visual but in this case most if not all was very clear to see but still Elder thinks it’s all a hoax. The evidence Elder provided in the article was unreasonable and irrelevant because no matter how many black people were killed by cops white or black it was always the history of brutality. In cases African Americans are not treated as a normal person should be and are taken advantage of in the situation. That’s the reason everyone is preaching BLM.

    Author: Larry Elder

Title: “Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them”

    Topic: Disagreement on Police Brutality

Thesis: There is no “epidemic” of racist cops killing black suspects.

    Reasons/Details Supporting Thesis:
“In 2018, there were approximately 7,400 black homicide victims, more than half of the nation’s total number of homicides, while the black population is 13% of the U.S. total. Of that number, the police killed a little more than 200 blacks, and nearly all of them had a weapon or violently resisted arrest.”
“ A police officer is 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.” Last year, according to The Washington Post, the police killed nine unarmed blacks. They killed 19 unarmed whites. In recent years, about 50 cops have been shot and killed annually in the line of duty. So, more cops are killed each year than are unarmed black suspects.”

Summary: In the article “ Where’s Black Lives Matter when you need them”, author Larry Elder talks about police brutality and feels that there’s no epidemic of racist cops killing black suspects.Elder first speaks on the death of George Floyd. He talks about the story of Floyd, however speaks about it as if his death was an accident. Elder further states that he doesn’t believe in police brutality and states that “the problem with these assertions are that they are false, not supported by data”.Elder’s belief is black people’s cause of death is most likely a homicide and black-on-black crime.White people’s cause of death is likely due to a car accident or drowning.Elder’s point in stating the percentage of white unarmed people killed by police more than black unarmed people is because he wants people to understand that it’s not only black people lives that’s being taken by police. He’s saying that people have to think about them as well, they’re facing the same problem as black people. The problem with these statistics is that there’s a big gap and difference between the black and white people that died killed by police officers.
