“Godzilla vs. Megalon”, 1973
I chose a room fromΒ Godzilla vs. Megalon, a really campy 70s movie that I loved as a kid. The space is a temple or throne room, where the Emperor of “Seatopia” and a group of dancers perform a ritual to summon the monster Megalon. The overall aesthetic is minimalist and modern with some historical references, like the big moai statue in the background and the emperor’s Greco-Roman costume.
- This table is similar to the stage that the emperor is standing on. The smaller size of the tiles would keep it visually distinct from the larger ones that make up the stage. https://superstudio.us/products/superstudio-coffe-table
- This decorative object references the shape of the lightbulbs (spherical). It has a chrome top paired with a matte wooden base, which echoes the silver costumes and decoration against the brown stone walls. https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/mirrors/convex-mirrors/vintage-french-mirrored-sphere-on-wooden-stand/id-f_34054732/
- This ring complements the Emperor’s costume. Both incorporate ancient Greek and Roman design elements, and the pearl references the other glowing orbs in the shot as well as Seatopia’s undersea location. https://www.ssense.com/en-us/men/product/versace/gold-pearl-medusa-greca-ring/10529941
- This sculpture by Arcangelo Sassolino uses a robot arm to gradually sand a (reproduction) classical statue to nothing. I chose it because it combines ancient and modern visuals in a creepy way. https://www.arcangelosassolino.it/damnatio
