March 13, 2026: Introduction to Wikimedia Commons [online]

Join Jen Hoyer from City Tech Library on Thursday, November 13th at 10am for a 30 minute introduction to Wikimedia Commons, the internet’s best image repository.

In our 30 minutes together we’ll cover:

  • What is Wikimedia Commons?
  • How can images from Wikimedia Commons be used for teaching or in student assignments?
  • How can individuals contribute to Wikimedia Commons?

We’ll practice searching Wikimedia Commons, explore the types of content available, look at various rights policies and usage licenses on images, and learn about fun initiatives and contests for contributing images to Wikimedia Commons.

This workshop is taking place online and will not be recorded. If you can’t attend, keep an eye out for future offerings of this same workshop.

Archives+CUNY+Wikipedia: an editathon at City Tech

Join us at City Tech Library to use CUNY’s rich archival resources for editing Wikipedia!

Did you know that City Tech has an amazing archive—and we’re just one of many CUNYs with a rich historic repository? At this event, we’ll be using digitized archival material from City Tech and other CUNYs to edit Wikipedia pages about people and events connected to CUNY’s history.

No editing experience required! This event will start with a short training session for anyone new to Wikipedia or who would like a refresher. We’ll be working in a space with desktop computers for all participants, so laptops are not needed. Food and drinks will be provided.

If you’d like to start brainstorming what’s possible, check out historic student newspapers from City Tech, Medgar Evers College, York College, and the College of Staten Island! We’ll also look at how the CUNY Digital History Archive can be a resource for editing about Occupy CUNY, the fight for Asian American Studies at Hunter College, the history of Puerto Rican Studies at Brooklyn College, and more.

This event is supported by a Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grant for Exploring Wikiprojects at City Tech Library. All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC’s code of conduct and Photo Consent Policy.

Where: City Tech Library, 300 Jay Street, Brooklyn NY 11201

When: April 16, 2026, 12:30 – 4:00pm (feel free to join us for any portion of this time)

In collaboration with Wikimedia NYC, City Tech Library is hosting an event for anyone who is wikicurious—that is, new to Wiki-editing and eager to learn more. We’ll focus our energy on editing Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles for individuals and neighborhoods identified through Wikimedia NYC’s NYC400 campaign.

Are you new to Wikipedia? This is your opportunity to learn the ropes! Do you have a lot of experience as an editor? Spend time with us taking a deep dive into some of the NYC content that the NYC400 campaign has identified for improvement.

Food and drinks will be provided.

The NYC400 campaign is supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

Are you teaching a class related to New York City history, geography, or culture? Interested in how your students might take part in this event? Or, just curious about other wikipedia events coming up this academic year? Stop by!

Attendees will be welcome to share their own experiences and questions about Wikipedia in the classroom, and there will also be a brief introduction to resources available through WikiEdu. We’ll also be joined by Richard Knipel, CUNY’s Wikimedian in Residence, for a quick look at how Wikipedia has been used on other CUNY campuses to create and share knowledge.
