Cory McCarthy

Hi there! I’m Cory, a Data Science major, this is my second and likely permanent transfer here at City Tech. My hobbies mainly consist of playing video games, watching anime, reading, playing instruments (I can play every woodwind) and trying to learn other languages. I have difficulty sticking to one thing, I feel I tend to learn enough about a topic to maintain a conversation and fulfill my interests, but never master anything. My personally philosophy is I believe that the meaning of life is to learn as many different things as life will let us in our short time on earth. I believe people should accept challenges and face them with tenacity; failure is only your first steps towards success. In one way or another, I see me not fully mastering anything as going against this philosophy I follow, so I’ve made a recent goal to master something and put my all into it. I haven’t decided what I’m going to apply it towards yet, but I’m leaning towards fully being fluent in another language aside from English and Spanish. I’m really looking forward to this class since one of my favorite writers is Edgar Allan Poe, he really exposed me to a deeper understanding of imagery in writing. If I had to pick my favorites from him it’d have to be Tell-Tale heart and The Cask of Amontillado. As for what gothic means to me, it’s facing the reality of existence when there are moments of gloom, horror or mystery roaming about. It’s all there and more often than not people will wear their masks to cover it up or deliberately ignore it. Gothicism combats and depicts these ideas to the fullest gory, dark and destructive ways possible to really get that message across that these things are there and it’s okay that they are; don’t fight it but make something beautiful out of it. I look forward to everyone’s interpretations and perspectives on all the spooky stuff we read this semester!

    Hi Cory,
That’s so cool that you mention Edgar Allan Poe, he always has dark some mysteries. I have read some of his works, he’s a great poet with some dark stories. I remember reading Tell-tale heart in 8th grade. It’s been a while since I read his works. I’ve read the “The Raven” and “The black cat” also few other literatures he wrote. I remember learning that he had mental health issues which is why all his works are so dark. It’s nice to know someone who enjoy his literatures as well.

Hi Cory, it is so nice to meet you! I like how you describe the Gothic as “facing the reality of existence when there are moments of gloom, horror or mystery roaming about” and how you point out that the Gothic portrays the beauty in the gloomy and dark. Where did you get the photo you posted? Have you been to the Paris catacombs?!
