Question 8

David from Giovanni’s room and Dean from on the road are similar in many ways. For one they are both on the outside looking in wishing to be like who they admire. David is a homosexual who really wants to be society’s normal and be straight but he can’t help him self.  Dean is a person who wants to be like people he doesn’t really understand but he likes the type of people they are. Another thing that makes them similar is that they both don’t really know what they want in life cause David finds a man named Giovanni who is very care free and free spirited and he is interested in him in the idea of being homosexual. Dean finds people that he wants to be like and then he looses interest in them and then we wants to be like someone else. They are different because David  is struggling to find himself and figure out what to do in life and Dean is a man who doesn’t know much about the many kinds of people in the world.

  1. Nice comparison, Taylor. You mention that David admires heterosexuality because he wishes he could be straight, but then he also admires Giovanni’s carefree nature. Do you think both can be true? If you think a bit more about the comparison you are making here, I bet you could develop a strong thesis for your essay!

I agree with you Taylor. And to answer the question Laura asked, I do think he does both. He admire’s Giovanni’s carefree attitude in the beginning, the fact that he could do something he had yet been able to do. He also admires masculinity in others- something else he didn’t know how to bring out in himself.

I agree that David and Dean are very similar, like you said they both do have the grass is greener on the other side mentality. Even though their desires are different, David wants to live a “normal life” and not be a homosexual, and Dean just wants to be like the other individuals he sees. I also agree with Lynn, David does like the care-free lifestyle but also desperately wants to be more masculine;therefore, causing his internal conflict.
