Abstract: modified

Solid waste management in New York City, having the highest population density in the United States, is important for keeping the City clean in the aspect of sanitation. A field work in Brooklyn Cadman Plaza was carried out in order for measuring amount of solid waste in garbage cans. We found that the large amount of garbage in the Plaza has been generated and potentially would be a large draw for vermin. It also has high traffic due to restaurants, shops, offices, courts, tourist and general use of the Plaza by residents. This food resource is left in the Plaza until is collected. The density of solid waste in garbage cans is also calculated. It also gives us an estimate on the potential food resources available for vermin. The calculation of individual cans usage will lead to a better planning and placement of garbage cans in the future.
