Going into my interview at a boxing gym, I was extremely nervous. However, once the conversation shifted toward boxing, sports, and fitness, everything began to feel more natural. We connected over a shared interest in combat sports, which made the interview feel less formal and more like a genuine conversation. This helped me relax quickly and present myself more confidently.
After being accepted into the internship, I was given my start date and introduced to my supervisor, who oversees my work and guides me throughout the experience. From that point on, I prepared by reviewing the gym’s social media and researching other boxing gyms to better understand their branding and visual style. This helped me begin thinking about how design is used within the fitness and boxing industry.
On my first official day, it was extremely cold, and I remember rushing from the train station to the gym to stay warm while making sure I arrived early. I wanted to make a strong first impression, so I dressed very formally. However, once I arrived, I quickly realized the environment was more relaxed and welcoming than I expected. My initial anxiety faded and was replaced with excitement as I became more comfortable in the space and began interacting with both staff and members.
The boxing gym where I am interning is one of the most historically significant gyms in the United States. Founded in 1937, it has built a strong reputation within both professional and amateur boxing. It operates as a private business and focuses on boxing training, fitness, and athletic development. Its clients range from professional fighters to beginners and individuals interested in general fitness, making it a diverse and inclusive environment.
Within the organization, I work in a creative, media-related role under my supervisor, focusing on content creation, including photography and graphic design. This allows me to see how branding and visual communication are used in a real-world sports setting.
One recent article from the New York Post explains how the gym continues to maintain its legacy while adapting to modern audiences. Despite its long history, it remains active and attracts both athletes and public figures. The article emphasizes the strong sense of community within the gym and highlights programs that support youth and other groups. From this, I learned that the gym’s success is not only based on its history, but also on its ability to stay relevant and community-focused.
Another article from the Brooklyn Paper discusses the gym being honored by New York City through a street co-naming. This recognition reflects its cultural importance and long-standing influence in boxing. The article highlights its global reputation and history of training elite fighters. From this, I learned that the gym is not just a training facility, but also a landmark with deep historical significance.
