Advice for future students

To Future Research Seminar Students,

be aware that starting your paper soon as possible is one of the best advises  I can give you for this course. Selecting a good topic may not be the easy, so knowing that at first hand would be great. It would be a great way for you to start thinking about your paper, and how you would like to approach it.

However, if it turns out that you don’t like your original topic, don’t wait too long to change it. If you wait too long that will back you up on actually writing your paper and you will find yourself in a dilemma.

Moreover, starting your paper as soon as possible gives you the upper hand.  For example, in the long run you will not be stressing yourself out when the deadline comes around. Also, since a there’s a lot of research to get done, you would not want to procrastinate. Time management is very Important in this course, use it wisely.

Advice for future students

First and foremost, the most important advice I can give to future student is choosing the right topic for your research paper. It is very important to choose a right topic that interest you as it will help to engage you throughout your writing process. After you decide the topic, try to do more research on it and get as much resources as you can to support your paper. Visit the school’s library website for online articles and databases like EBSCO and LexisNexis and make sure to save all the links as you need to have at least 18 references for your research paper.

Also, it is very important to ask question and interact more with professor if you have any confusing regarding your paper. Professor Shapiro is very flexible and is always available to help you in writing a successful paper. I also advice the future students to have a proper time management to write the paper as this course requires a lot of time. Try to put at least 2-3 hours of work per week in the paper if you want to do well in this course.

Last but not the least, always make sure to follow the outline and APA style guide line to write your research paper. Do not wait until the very end to complete your paper, else you will end up stressing yourself. Ask questions, use your time wisely, do proper research and you will be fine. GOOD LUCK..!

Advice for future students

For the future students, it’s very important for you to do a time management because you don’t want to hastily doing the homeworks. Especially you have more than 5 courses, you have to manage your time to do everything, otherwise you will only the time to do the homework before the due day. Also for this course Research Seminar, you have to understand that 1 hour per week is not enough. This course costs a lot of time to research to gain knowledge, and to structure the paper.

From my experience, I have 6 course this semester, and I also have a 4 days job a week. I’m totally run out of time to do my homeworks. I always use the night before due day to finish HW. This forces me finish the hw faster, but also lower my grades of hw. Therefore, my suggest, Please Plan your schedule before the semester start, otherwise you will regret that why didn’t you finish the hw early.

Advice for future students

To all the future students who are planning to take HMGT 3502 I advise you to read and understand the topic that you are going to research about. Find a topic that you are interested in or else you are going to be struggling. I had many topics in mind but i wanted to challenge myself with a topic that i don’t really know much about and trust me i was struggling to find articles and understanding the topic. My problem was that i wasn’t taking this class seriously at first i found a bunch of article but did not read them and just threw them all onto my resources to fulfill his assignment. I advise the future students to not make the same mistake as i did because when it came to writing my paper all the sources i had under resources were all problems.

Make sure when you are looking for sources look for some problems and have some sources to support your solution. I mean its okay to just throw random sources into your resource because he requires 18 sources at the end and you must use at least 12 resources. When you need help with your research for sources, writing your paper or any of the assignments professor Shapiro will always be grateful to help you. All you need to do is reach out to him and setup an phone conversation with him. I also advise future students to not procrastinate because this course requires a lot of time to research. Also i advise students to take no more than five classes when taking research because you might not have time to work on your research due the amount of assignment that your other class will give out.

Another best advice is to follow the guide line that professor gives out. The guide line basically explains what needs to be in your paper. Make sure your paper flows along with your outline or at least similar to your outline. Overall this course isn’t bad at all. All you need to do is spend as much time as you can and when you are stuck… DON’T WAIT ! just text or email the professor.

Advice on Research Seminar class

If I were to give students advice in regards to the Research Seminar class it would be to always submit your assignment whether or not it is complete. Submitting something that is incomplete is definitely better than submitting nothing at all; partial credit is better than nothing. Try your best to keep up with the due dates otherwise it will catch up to you.

Carissa Simeone: Research Seminar Future Students

This class is certainly a senior level class and a few key points that I would inform other students that need to take this course is time management and quality topic/resources. The topic of choice for my paper is very relevant with the times (strategies & tactics regarding environmental habits/choices amongst hotel guests), so I was able to find a lot of articles on the City Tech Library and several other databases.

Time management is key. I failed to complete the first draft on time, and I understand that I will need to speed up the progress in my paper which I have! Professor Shapiro gives a lot of feedback. It can be a little hazy as to starting the paper. It was challenging for me to get the first few paragraphs started, and to stay organized in my writing, not just babbling. So definitely to make sure the paper is going ‘flow’ is crucial. It is helpful to print out the outline you create the first few weeks in class, have a physical copy of the outline in front of you as your typing the paper to stay on track!

I reread my paragraphs, made small changes, and using a thesaurus is helpful in order to enhance the language in the paper. Although we primarily work on the google document in this particular class, Microsoft Word document, when typing a paper provides suggested synonyms when you right click on the word (similar to what a thesaraus provides) which has helped me improve my vocabulary in a lot of my college papers!!

Future Students

For research seminar, there are so many things I don’t understand or like about the class. I wish there was a clearer understanding of what is expected for the paper. I would of love if their were a checklist provided for each draft or assignment that was due.
When picking this class do your research on your professor because that makes a big difference, pay attention, take a lot of notes and ask as many questions as possible. You learn something new at every class session so you maybe confused so try your best to get in contact with your professor as much as needed.

Hey, so you plan on taking Research Seminar. Before you start this course, let me give you some tips. I promise it’ll help, trust me.

Show up on time and be ready to learn!

When it comes to a course like this, you want to show up early every time class is scheduled. You want to take notes on anything and almost everything that might be essential to help you when it comes to creating your paper. Missing a class can be a major setback. It’ll be challenging to catch up and troublesome. You’ll often find yourself emailing your professors and or colleagues in regards of the material you missed on the day you were absent.

Follow Guidelines and reach out for help!

When it comes to writing your paper, no matter what topic you choose, you want it to be great. Therefore, you will be required to follow guidelines and use credible sources. Utilize the databases that your college has provided for you. If you are stuck and or having issues with your paper, contact your professor. Making an appointment to be personally advised by a professional can be helpful. If your professor didn’t have time to help you in class, with that appointment, they will cater to you until you are capable to develop the ideal paper. Do not wait until later in the semester to ask for help or to fix it yourself, it will harm your grade.
