Ideation Scenario

User:  The Halls of Pain is an interactive zombie dungeon crawler targeted for gamers, tech enthusiasts, and survival horror fans.  The users will be people who want a more personalized, reality-augmenting experience.

Context:  Ever since Capcom coined the term “Survival Horror”, with its 1996 release of Resident Evil, the genre has continued to grow in popularity.  While the games have continued to improve with technological advances, they are typically limited to a local experience via arcade, pc, or gaming console.  Gamers now have the ability to interact in variety of ways, such as voice commands, physical gestures, or some other special peripheral.  Even with all the advances, there still remains a distinct separation between the gamer and the environment.  These experiences are more inclusive than immersive.

Motivation:  With the popularity of shows like “The Walking Dead”, and the movie “World War Z”, it’s clear that everyone is preparing for a zombie apocalypse.  There’s no better way than an immersive zombie slaying experience. Not only will users be able to fully interact with their environment, they will also be challenged with attacks from zombies and make difficult decisions to see if they have what it takes to survive.

Solution:  Users will begin The Halls of Pain by donning a google-glass-like head gear, and having their surroundings scanned using projector-depth camera units.  The units map the room and project the game based on the layout of the area and user position.  Combining the head gear and projected game space, the users will be able to to fully interact with the environment in several ways.  They can explore the dungeon, open doors, shoot and attack zombies, dodge attacks, collect items, and issue voice commands.  The heads up display will show the health bar, the infected level bar, inventory (collected items such as weapons), the map, weapon strength, and ammo.

Outcome:  The Halls of Pain will provide zombie lovers with the ultimate experience.  For the first time they’ll be able to have a true first-person survival horror experience.  While they face the zombies, they will become a part of the experience, as the augmented reality manifests around them. Most importantly they can answer the question at the heart of the game, ”Can you really survive a zombie apocalypse?!?”
