Second Research Proposal

The second research proposal the topic will be about the damage that many homosexuals face within our society. Not only that there is harassment when homosexuals walk down the streets it doesn’t only happen there but also in homes , schools and jobs. The way how society treat other human beings is absurd. The damages that are left on homosexuals leave some physical and psychological effect. These harsh words and mistreatment leads to death, depression, being a social outcast, sever condition and maybe even suicide. There is a lot of cases about this even though most people don’t see it through their eyes or they are just being plain ignorant. This a serious thing when we outcast someone for being themselves and not fully understanding the way human are.It start out as little comments , jokes , and teasing from others. In the article its about a boy name Michael who is 16 years old who suffers because people mistreat him about his sexuality. Everyone would treat him different. Michael would notice that his boyfriend didn’t have to suffer as much as he did . Michael actually spoke to a adult which was his teacher but little did she helped. Nothing changed about it because she acted as if everything is normal about it. She thought it was just a playful game that happens in the playground. It is sad to think that even an adult think it is acceptable for these types of actions to occur. No action has happened to the harassment to this boy was taken. Now put yourself in his shoes all the damages was that taken to endure all this pain. Some people sees “homosexuality” as a problem.

Second draft proposal

I decided to change my topic a bit. Instead of researching happiness in abused foster children I was going to take a few steps back and research happiness and well being in foster children. When I went to research the topic to find my sources a lot of links came up. I figured I would get a better amount of articles and other research if instead of just using plane Google I would instead use Google scholar. This helped narrow down the links and sources that I got. Foster care is a huge issue nowadays. Most foster children and put into homes where the foster parent already has at least a dozen other foster children. Stating the fact that everyone knows that if you take care of a foster child you get money from the government. There’s a lot of questions that can be asked as to why the amount of children in the foster care system is slowly increasing every year. Every child although if they are in foster care should be able to have the chance to achieve well being and happiness. If a child is not able to do so then their life can and will be affected drastically. For example school is a big issue. The can end up acting out in school and have behavioral issues. Seeking attention anyway they can get it. Some foster children are put through abuse and neglect.

Bruskas, D. (2008), Children in Foster Care: A Vulnerable Population at Risk. Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing, 21: 70–77. doi: 10.1111/j.1744-6171.2008.00134.x

This article was all about foster care and the effect it has on a child well-being. Stating that children in foster care have been through traumatic events and also abuse. Loosing the child’s parents or knowing they didn’t want them can have a huge impact on the child’s life. Considering they are young when this all happens. In the article it states “experience feelings of confusion, fear, apprehension of the unknown, loss, sadness, anxiety, and stress.” A child’s life is becoming a mess before they even hit puberty. The article also talks about how if a child is going through any of these feeling (named above) need to be treated as soon as possible. Or negative affects can occur such as problems with development of issues with mental health.

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0190740904002117

This article talks about how two studies were conducted. The studies were basically about the well being of children in foster care. In most cases children in foster care don’t usually stay in one foster home for very long. This can cause the child to be unstable, due to them never being in a stable environment. In the article it states “Children adjust well to long-term foster care”. Children are happy in a environment where they know well. So having children stay in one foster home for a extensive period of time will benefit the child in the end. In the article it talked about how a study was conducted. Talking about how most children were happier in all aspects of life in the current place that they were in. Other children felt that they weren’t getting all the help that they needed, and they wanted more. This resulted in the foster child not liking their foster parent. A foster child should be happy in the home that they are in, and if they are not they should be switched to another home where they have a better chance of being happy.

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/106/Supplement_3/909.short

This article talks about how that they are almost 750,000 children who are in foster care, but that’s only in the united states. Also talking about how more people are trying to push adoption so that children in foster care will not increase. Most children who are put into foster care already have mental health or developmental problems. What is even worse is that the children in foster care who do have this problems are not treated with the right care. So the problems that the child has may get worse because of the treatment they are not receiving but need. Most people would call that neglect. The article also talked about how these problems can be decreased also increasing the well-being of the child. This can be done by evaluating the foster parents more thoroughly to insure that the people they are putting these children with are able to take care of them the right way.

second draft proposal

Happiness in culture/ temporary pleasures

I feel like my first proposal was week and didn’t have enough information to expand on and research. In this essay I will be discussing happiness and quality of life. There are many different prospective of happiness between people of different cultures.  Doesn’t many people have different views on happiness and what makes them happy? People can say that the environment a person is brought up in can have a major effect on their views of happiness. Wouldn’t a poor little boy from Ethiopia’s view of happiness be a nice hot meal and some water that’s not miles away from home? And now wouldn’t a young boy from the suburbs who was raised in a nice home view of happiness be getting rid of their food before their parents see them, or even going to Disney land? Even little kids have their views of happiness, but a person’s culture and their quality of life has major effects on your prospective of happiness. Even we as adults have many temporary pleasures that make us believe we are happy, many find their temporary happiness through sex, alcohol drugs, and fashionable clothing.

The first book I a saw was about culture and happiness “The Geography of Bliss,” by Eric Weiner. In this book, Weiner travels the globe to find secrets of happiness and unhappiness in many locations.

Another interesting part to happiness may involve a lack of thinking. In India, Weiner was struck that thinking was discouraged because it contributed to unhappiness. As an Indian told him, “You should not think too much. You should not have anything in your mind. The more you think, the less happy you will be.”

http://thequestforagoodlife.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/the-quest-for-happiness-across-cultures/

There are many cultural services stopping Americans from creating deep connections with other people. For example, Americans work longer hours and travel more than any people in the world. This takes away time from our loved ones, an important source of true happiness.

Helaine Selin, Gareth Davey Springer Science & Business Media, Feb 29, 2012 – History

The West is considered “materialistic, and happiness comes from achievement and gaining”. The East is said to be more “people oriented, where happiness is a result of deep personal relations. So, poor people can be happier in the East than the West, because they are not so concerned with possession and more with society. It is definitely true that people experience happiness differently. Some people are strong, and can put difficult times behind them easily; others stick to sorrow and hard times. Whether this is a problem of culture or personality its hard to measure; most likely it is a blend of both.

Second Draft Proposal

So as I still decided to keep looking on about my topic technology and the effects it has on teenagers health various articles came up about this topic. Many things having to do with their sleep, paying attention in class, body posture and etc. This topic is very controversial because so many teenagers are constantly using technology for every little thing such as, looking up a contact, searching through Google, playing video games, texting someone and etc. How bad your health can become can also determine your happiness/well-being because if you don’t have a good health most likely you won’t be so happy about much in life. Although, many good things can come out from using technology such as, learning how to socialize more, teaching kids in an engaging way and etc. This is a topic that can be viewed from two different point of views in a good way in which it can teach kids or disrupt their health. I’m interested in this topic because nowadays technology is used for so many things but how much teenagers use it we don’t really know the effects it can have on us and I want to find these kinds of things out. I want to find out the statistics and facts about technology and the effects it produces on teenagers. So many little things can effect us from using technology so much. How you use the computer can affect your body posture. When using the computer you should be at a desk and use a chair or something that can help support your back to be straight. When texting this could lead to anxiety, falling grades, and etc because you’re not paying attention to the important things but always want to be texting. We are constantly seeing how much teenagers are on their technological devices not knowing the effects these things has on them.

Hafner, Katie. “Texting May Be Taking a Toll.” The New York Times 25 May 2009. Web. 17 Nov. 2014. <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/26/health/26teen.html?_r=0>.

This article had to do with all the studies done on teenagers about technology and the health effects. This article mentions the types of effects it has on teenagers such as distraction in school, falling grades, sleep deprivation and etc. Also by how much you text would begin to result in cramping in your thumbs. Just like when you write a lot nonstop your hand begins to hurt. Many teenagers are becoming very attentive to their phones only even while eating out, walking in busy streets and late at night when their parents have fallen asleep. They are becoming more obsessed with wanting to answer their phones. Like mentioned in the article teenagers are also becoming less aware about things because they are more interested in answering their phone right away when they feel it vibrate or light up. Basically, the more you begin to use your phones and other technological devices you’re doing more harm to yourself rather than another person.

Clinton, Chelsea, and James Steyer. “Is the Internet hurting children?.” CNN 21 05 2012, n. pag. Web. 16 Nov. 2014. <http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/21/opinion/clinton-steyer-internet-kids/>.

Beginning from a very young age children are becoming more aware about technology because they are introduced to it by their parents. So many kids are spending more time with their technological devices than with their parents. So much media and technology is impacting teenagers lives. They are having limited attention span, lower comprehension, poor focus and etc. It has become so complex this topic that we really don’t understand these effects. Things I didn’t know that technology could effect in so much. This article also mentions how all of this technology has even changed the way we think and feel about ourselves. So much technology is like already doing this. Also this article mentions how much technology could be changing our education, help advance our democracy and etc in the near future. In the article a researcher at Harvard says, “we have no choice but to engage with this new reality and work to ensure that it affects our kids in healthy, responsible ways”(Gardner 3). Even though kids are involved with technology it should be used in a positive way as well.

“Here’s What A Constantly Plugged-In life Is Doing To Kids’ Bodies .” Huffington Post 17 10 2013, n. pag. Web. 16 Nov. 2014. <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/17/teens-on-screens_n_4101758.html>.

This article is all about these negative effects technology has on teenagers such as, hunched over, fingers and wrist suffering, sight could be affected, sleep is disrupted, losing bit of hearing, and brains are different. So many effects of using technology and teenagers are not stopping from using less of it. Although, this article mentions these effects and ways in which the teenager can change this a little more. For each topic mentioned about the effects they mention a brief description about why teenagers sight might be affected or sleep disrupted. Than they mention how you could reduce these effects. The effects of sleeping being disrupted is from so much light the brain confuses so you stay up later. Things you could do to reduce that would be getting at least your 9.25 hours of sleep or making a plan with your parents of no phone after 11pm. All the other topics were just like this in a way letting you ways you could reduce and be more healthy for your life.

2nd research proposal: How does the incarceration of a parent affect the well-being of a child’s education?

The affect that an incarcerated parent has on the well-being of a child’s education interests me. Being that an incarcerated parent has many affects on a child, such as residential instability, economic and behavioral problems. I’m choosing to focus on their education. An incarcerated parent can have both negative and positive affects on a child. I would like to further explore them all. This is a very sensitive topic for me. While doing my research for this assignment, I’ll be able to make a few assessments about my own children. I was recently incarcerated. All I could do was think about the negative affects it played on my children. When in fact, it went both ways, negative and positive. The loss of a parent, whether it be temporary or not can affect the child. It can affect the child physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. All of those can contribute to the way a child performs academically. I just can’t help to think about how this all plays a part on a child’s education. If a child develops physical restraints such as bad headaches due to the stress of losing their parent. They won’t be able to focus in school, because their in so much pain. A child may experience mental issues like (PTSD) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. That can ultimately lead to an emotional problem such as depression. These problems affect the way the child may think and learn. It affects the child’s ability or motivation to wanting to get a proper education. Those factors even lead to the way the child socializes. The child may be withdrawn and unable to interact in class discussions or group activities in school. Then there are children who are affected in a total opposite way. The incarceration of the parent can actually be what inspires them to do the best with their education. The affect of wanting to be the total opposite of what their parent became. A child might even push hard on obtaining their education to become a lawyer, in hopes of defending their parent with legal issues at hand. So many possibilities with this situation raise my interest in doing this study. I don’t exactly know what resources I will be using, other than the internet. I’d like to collaborate the knowledge that I have already on my children. Such as report cards during my incarceration, and the ones I have now since my release. There is a substantial amount of evidence there that would help me to draw my conclusion. I plan to argue that a child’s education is affected when their parent has been incarcerated. Whether it be a positive or negative, its still has its affects. I want to educate others while educating myself about the affects incarceration has on a child’s education. The fact that if a child’s education is tarnished, there could be room for a repetitive cycle of the child becoming incarcerated in their later years. while doing this research I plan to explore all aspects of a incarcerated parent’s child’s education.

http://crcw.princeton.edu/workingpapers/WP08-10-FF.pdf

This is one of the sites that I recently visited. It provides similar studies. They identify the risks particular to the children of incarcerated parents. They use surveys and studies done on the demographic. showing the results of their study, that the children are more likely to face more difficulties overall in life than their counterparts. Listing the barriers and hardships the children face. I can really use the data collected and the statistics shown.

http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/08/mfs-ip/incarceration&family/ch4.shtml

This site discusses the effects of incarcerated parents on children. contents include: Negative effects on child development, Mechanisms of risk; parental separation, economic hardship, and harsh parenting; change in caregivers, stigma and social isolation, protective factors and research limitations. These are important to my research, they list statistics from studies done from the year of 1986 until 2008. Listing how many children suffer from an absent parent due to incarceration.

http://crcw.princeton.edu/workingpapers/WP12-22-FF.pdf

This site focuses on the effects of maternal incarceration on children’s behavioral problems. The reports are from 21 caregiver and teacher reports about 9 year old’s behavioral problems. They’ve drawn three conclusions. They all conclude that children with behavioral problems are consistent with an absent mother. This is important to my research because it coincides with my argument that; due to incarcerated parents, a child’s behavioral issues affects their education.

http://www.osborneny.org/images/uploads/printMedia/Initiative%20CIP%20Stats_Fact%20Sheet.pdf

This site is a children of incarcerated parents fact sheet. Its gives another factor, being the relationship between a child and their parent prior to incarceration. It offers the misconception idea that, children of incarcerated parents are more likely to be incarcerated than their peers. I had this assumption, but the site states, “There is no basis for this existing research”. This site is important because it gives other view points that I hadn’t thought to explore prior to writing my research proposal.

Second draft of my research proposal: Positive Psychology

The main purpose of this research paper is going to be positive psychology and how people aren’t assisted in achieving their full potential of happiness. This topic seems intriguing because of it’s unique views, not many people have even heard of the concept. Positive psychology revolves around the idea that people are often aided to become basically neutral in life, when they should be guided on becoming happy. Often when individuals are diagnosed with depression they are given medication and therapy to get them to a place where they’re okay with life. Not jumping for joy but not in a dark place like they were, but when this concept is brought into play it makes people think, is that any better? If people are being helped to get out of that bad place and emotional state then why leave them half way? Wouldn’t it be more helpful in helping them achieve happiness? This is why this idea is so interesting. The fact that it is believed that these individuals are being helped by just making them feel OK isn’t a service. Feeling neutral isn’t happiness or content, it’s just getting by. People shouldn’t just get by in life, they should experience happiness and live their life to it’s full extent, actually enjoy it. When people seek medical help for their problems or are recommended to get help, their goal or mission isn’t to be mentally OK, it’s to achieve happiness. This idea of trying to make people happy and not just OK is fascinating especially if you’ve witnessed someone going through depression and also in therapy. It gives you more of an insight on how people are helped to only achieve the bare minimum of happiness. Throughout this research paper, the focus is be on how doctors aren’t putting their all into making their clients happy but more so into just getting them to a “normal” state.

Seligman, Martin, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. “Positive Psychology: An Introduction.”Http://onesearch.cuny.edu/. US: American Psychological Association, 1 Mar. 2000. Web. 16 Nov. 2014.

The main focus in this article is to prove how building yourself on the in and outside could make you a better person. Whether it’s building knowledge or the way you’re living it makes your life in a whole more positive and how it leads to a better life. Individuals often don’t believe that the simplicities in life such as basic needs can aid someone into being happier. When doing these things can cause happier people and happier lives.

Cohrs, Christopher, Daniel Christie, Mathew White, and Chaitali Das. “Contributions of Positive Psychology to Peace: Toward Global Well-being and Resilience.”Onesearch.cuny.edu. US: American Psychological Association, 14 Oct. 2013. Web. 16 Nov. 2014.

A lot of people don’t know is that people’s current state of being and mind can disturb peace. Of course it alarms the question of how so, but it can actually cause stir ups in communities. In the article’s abstract it states, “we discuss positive emotions, engagement, meaning, personal well-being, and resilience may impact peace at different levels, ranging from the personal and interpersonal to community, national, and global peace” if people are happier it makes for a happier community. In the end or the bigger picture a happier community makes a happier place. There are also arguments on how experiences could tie into this and how it could eventually help to tackle bigger and more serious issues.

Burne, Jerome. “Lives Destroyed by Happy Pills: As Our Use of Antidepressants DOUBLES in a Decade, Experts Say Thousands Are Being given Dangerous Drugs They Don’t Need.”Http://www.dailymail.co.uk/. 29 June 2010. Web. 16 Nov. 2014.

In this article a woman is misdiagnosed with anxiety and depression. It may seem like no big deal until later on in the passage they explain how she was given numerous medications to assuage her symptoms. Not only did they make her feel worst than how she originally felt but she began to have suicidal thoughts. She had tried to explain to her doctor from the start but because of the 2 basic questions she was asked, they just diagnosed her with depression/anxiety and doubled her dose every time she tried to explain that she was only getting worst. They also state, “a busy GP sees about 100 patients a week. Out of those, 20 will be suffering from depression, but he will spot only ten of them and treat five, usually with drugs. Not only are the depressed missing out on treatment, 16 of those 100 patients will be told they are suffering from depression when they aren’t.” Doctors seem to believe that medication will solve any and everything when it could’ve simply been solved another way.

How music affects teenagers behavior towards society

After a lot of thought and brainstorming I finally came to a decision that I wanted to my topic to be on something to about music. I knew it had to be really specific and precise so I continued to think about what area would I like to learn more about that has to deal with music. As I was on my way home a couple of days ago I saw a group of teenagers listening to rap music and they were behaving in a crazy and somewhat hostile manner. I then thought to myself I should research how music affects teenagers behavior towards society. sometimes music can have a bad or a good influence on people especially teenagers. In high school my friends were always listening to music and would go around saying quotes from the songs. For example Chris Brown wrote a song about females not being loyal, ever since then boys or guys would go around saying that girls aren’t loyal so don’t trust them.

When you look around most of the time when you see teenagers they are always listening to music. Everyone of them having their own personal preference of what style of music they like. Some of them you see are dressed in all black and listening to goth and others you may see are dressed with snap backs, Jordans and white tees listening to rap.

“How Music Affects Teens.” Teen Ink. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Nov. 2014.

After I finally figured out what I wanted my topic to be I started to do some research. It honestly didn’t take me much time to find article or website that I liked because I went through the first couple of them I found interest in this one. This article talks about how certain music can define who a person is. It says that you can tell a person’s mood by the type of music that they are listening too. I agree with that because when I’m sad I don’t listen to songs that would make me dance but I listen to songs that  are slow and depressing. What I mainly love about this article is that it says, teens hangout or cling to other teens who like the same style music as them. That is also true because you would hardly see a person who likes country music hanging out with somebody who likes rock. It’s not something that is done on purpose but it’s something that is done naturally. They wouldn’t do that because like article also states teens would always be disagreeing with watch genre of music is right or what genre music is wrong. As teens they may not know how to really express themselves in the right way at times. I know when I was a teen I always listened to music that had a con ection to my mood. If I was in a mood where I didn’t want to talk to anyone I would listen to rap music so loud that you wouldn’t be able to hear yourself talk. The article mentions that music helps teens show emotions and express there feelings in way they sometimes can’t so by themselves. This article was a little short but gave me a basic outlook on my topic. I feel that from here on I will find even more interesting articles about my topic.

The relationship between happiness and sex

The goal of this paper is to make a reader gain a new perspective on the relationship between sex and an individual’s happiness. When asking about what feelings are related to sex, a person often answers good, or happy. Many wonder why this connection is so often made. This paper will explore this idea through a series of online articles and studies. This level of importance is seen in teenagers and adults lifetime. What is more surprising is the age that people are starting to have sex, as early as 13. But nobody really understands why. It is easy to say that teenagers don’t make the right decisions that they don’t look at the long term situation and only focus on the temporary feelings it may produce. But it is difficult to comprehend why, and that’s what this paper is aimed to do, to help the audience comprehend the why’s.
This topic interest me because teen pregnancy was something I saw a lot in my high school and I always thought why engage in risky sexual behavior that has serious consequences. When asking my 16 year old friend, she answered because she wanted to make her boyfriend happy. This statement left me thinking, does sex really make a person happy? Or is it something else? Why is sex advertised so much now a days? Birth control and free condoms are available for easy access to adolescence. There are so many factors that come along with sex, if a person expects to receive happiness from having sex, you might be let down. So I want to look at all these ideas and see why the feelings are associated. Also I feel like this is the elephant in the room while people think about it, talking about it may sometimes be awkward but definitely necessary.

Dr.Charles. Schmitz, Elizabeth.” Why touch is so important in a loving marriage”. Huffingpost.2013
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/16/sex-how-important-is-it_n_4275969.html
This article speaks on the relationship between happy couples and sex. The emphasis is put on sex, stating its necessary for a successful and happy couple. The article speaks on why this is, with evidence from a study conducted on happy couples. It explains why affection and touch from another person is essential to a person feeling good. The article is written to highlight sex as something good and necessary to a happy couple.

Happiness at home= happiness in life?

There are many factors in life that can have a positive or negative effect in achieving happiness. I have decided to study one of these factors. My possible topic for my research paper is about how growing up without a parent can affect a child’s ability to achieve happiness in their lives. This topic interests me because I believe that a person’s characteristics are the ones that lead them to success or failure/happiness or unhappiness. However, the characteristics that people have are often developed due to certain situation they went through in their life. A certain situation that can be considered is not having one of their parents in their life. This situation may affect the person and causes them to be in a certain way. This topic may be of interest to others because people are often curious of why others or themselves are the way they are. My research paper would give people insight to how individuals were affected by the absence of one of their parents and are suffering consequences in their personal traits and may not be able to achieve happiness because of that.

The sources that I may use for this research paper will be books such as my psychology book, articles about statistics in my topic, articles from newspapers related to my topic and I may ask some people about their experiences. I think some of the questions I should be asking about my topic are: what does a mother and father contribute to their child’s life? What contributions are essential in the well development of their child? What would a child lack of without one of their parents? Emotional stability? Economic stability? , How do these things affect the point of view of the child towards the world?, Are there negative characteristics that the child develops that may affect them in their lives?, How do these characteristics prevent them or may be an obstacle to achieve their desires, goals and happiness?. I think my proposal is argumentative because many people can give different reasons of why a person may not be able to achieve happiness. They may say is not justified that a person is not successfully happy because they were affected by the lack of one parent throughout their childhood. People may say that it was because of a bad relationship the person might have had, the bad economy, and so on.

This source mentions about how children who grow up without a father tend to develop negative characteristics such as: low self-esteem, lower IQs, anti-socialism and so on. It also states that the relationship of mother-father has an important impact of how parents will treat their children. If a father has a good relationship with the child’s mother then he would most likely spend more time with the children. Therefore he will give more attention to the children, who will eventually be healthier psychologically and emotionally. Same if a mother has a good relationship with the child’s father, she will respond more affectionate and caring for the children. This source will help me to prove that there are behaviors parents have that affect their child’s characteristics. Hence, the child’s characteristics will eventually affect them on how they achieve happiness in their lives.

The U.S. Military and Well-being

The U.S. Military has been making making their new recruits take a class about happiness and well-being. How is it that people who are being trained to kill others or enemies of the country be taking classes about well-being and the happiness of others? How are they going to use what they’ve learned in the those classes in a battle field? Or is it that the class is for themselves for when they’re are out of service for good? I mean it is a complex argument that cannot be just left alone meaning how are corrupted soldiers going to utilize happiness in war? Maybe, for those who have gone to battle and have see the worst of horrors, this class is to teach them about how  to come out of that situation sane or to be able to live their lives without the burden of what has happened. Maybe it is also to teach them about just being or becoming happy. However, why are they being forced to take a class about happiness before they go into service? Is it to feel happy about killing? These are serious questions that I have because I can’t seem to understand the reason behind this military class.
