Professional Goals

I am very interested in going to a graduate school for Social Work. The graduate program at schools like Stony Brook or Lehman College are the main programs that spark my interest. In order to become an affective professional I intend on getting my MSW which will prepare me with the essential knowledge to be of any help in my field.

I also want to start studying for the Human Service –Board Certified Practitioner (HS-BCP) examination while still working with my current agency AHRCNYC where I work as a community support professional for the developmentally disabled. I want to reach my full capacity in the human services field and being well versed. Ultimately, I hope to reach my goal and become a clinical SW and gravitate towards policy and planning, quality assurance, or to work for a city/state mental health/health and human services agency.

The code of ethical standards that relate to me with respect to commitment and value of long-life learning are responsibility to the profession. “Social workers should strive to become and remain proficient in professional practice and the performance of professional functions”.  The statement simply means to stay current as a social service work and not to become burnt-out which usually happens after being in a specific field for too long or out growing your work.

All code of ethics intend to serve an important role for the field of human service professionals. The codes of ethical standards that relate to me are first confidentiality. Confidentiality is very important to human service because it is needed in order to respect our client’s personal information not only for the sake of professionalism but also to establish trust relationship with client and provider. When trust is established between clients and professional they can self-disclose more, which can enable the professional to push pass barriers.

Responsibility to Self is standard number 36. Human service professionals hold a commitment to lifelong learning a continually advance their knowledge and skills to serve clients more effectively.

The last code of ethics that I relate to the most is as a Human Service professional, I understand that I am committed for life to continue seeking the experience, training and education necessary in order to serve my clients effectively. Standard 26 states that “Human service professionals seek the training, experience, education and supervision necessary to ensure their effectiveness in working with culturally diverse individual’s based on age, ethnicity, culture, race, ability, gender, language preference. Religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, nationality, or other historically oppressive groups”. I agree with this last code because I have a real love for the developmentally disabled community and also the LGBTQ community and this code stand up for both venerable populations.
