Read the “How a 17th century navel…” article. In it, Torelli’s Teatro Novissimo and his “chariot and pole” system are described. Copy and paste images Plates VIII, XVIII and XXII from Diderot’s Encyclopedia (also in Reading folder) onto a piece of paper. Based on your reading about Torelli, label drums (capstans), trolleys (aka, trucks or chariots), poles, winches, stage floor, elevator, scenery, and ropes in the three Plates from Diderot. Not all elements are in each Plate. The video in “How a 17th century” article will help you envision the operation of Torelli’s machine.
