Scavenger Hunt

While walking down the department hallway, we came upon a student who was working on her robotics project, surrounded by faculty and student academic posters.

Here is a centralized stand on which students can find relevant advisement forms.

I was excited to find this announcement of an awards ceremony taking place in the department.

To the degree that faculty have an office door, there is a lot of pertinent information posted.

Did what you find meet your standards? I was pleasantly surprised to find cohesive messaging throughout each department’s designated physical space. This branding went beyond my expectations.

What advisement goals will you set for your department? I would recommend mandatory meetings with my students to establish a new trend of systematizing advisement in the department. Also, I want to encourage the use more visual messaging in the physical space.

One thing I will improve about my department’s advisement plan isMake announcements in class; post messaging on my desk or office door about availability; perhaps assign students to specific faculty.

What story is told through your collective photos? The photos suggest an ethos that touches all engagement with students. These messages reach out to students. Their needs are a priority; their success is a collective goal.

What are we saying to students about persistence and retention? Students projects are showcased in the department space; documentation is centralized and accessible; those who persist are celebrated at an awards ceremony.

I really appreciated how much of our student work was made visible in your photos and on my own walk. It was refreshing to see but let’s now invite students to join in. I think all this visible work can be made better by inviting students in through contact information and links to official college webpages.
