I am currently employed with HHC as a cardiac nurse. Here at NYCCT, I am registered in the RN-BSN program, expecting to graduate in June 2015. The course Community Health Nursing is an interesting area in the nursing profession as taking pride in the health of the community is essential. At Bellevue Hospital Center where I am doing my clinical studies, I am assisting the diabetic educator in the diabetic clinic, where clients go to manage diabetes. On Tuesdays, the clients are scheduled for individual appointments from 9:00am-5pm. During this time, the clients experience a one-on-one session with the diabetic educator. Upon arrival to the room, the client is greeted and is offered a chair. The primary language is identified and the interpreter phone is utilized if the client does not speak English. The clients are asked to tell the educator how they have been managing their condition. Their logs containing blood glucose results from last appointments are compared, deviations from the normal range and medication regime are discussed. Clients are encouraged to ask questions. Educationally, this experience broadens my awareness in diabetes control. I was amazed to see how clients are able to control their condition by following their appointments, eating healthy meals, taking medications as prescribed, keeping a blood glucose log, interesting in knowing their A1C, engaging in moderate activities, and doing whatever they can do to stay healthy. Some clients do admit to cheating, but when their numbers went high they returned to the proper meals and increase their medication dose. (how clever). Working in the community is challenging, since you will need profound knowledge in health issues and the need to implement effective strategies to improve the problems in the community.
