  1. -In  Jerry Salz article ” Art at Arms Length” Salz defines the genre of the selfie and makes it clear what is special or unique about the selfie in the 3rd page section 2 called ” what they say”. In this section he writes “Selfies are our letters to the world. They are little visual diaries that magnify, reduce, dramatize that say, “Im here; look at me.” In other words the selfie is a quick and easy way  to show instant visual communication of what we are doing, what we do for fun, and who we think we are. To add on Salz also in the beginning the text refers to selfies as a ” fast self portrait made with a smartphone’s camera”.

Five Ways Salz describes what a selfie is (pg 2)

    1. selfies are nearly always taken from within an arm’s length of subject.

    2. Selfies are casual .

    3. Selfies are improvised,fast .

    4. Primary purpose is to be seen here, now

    5. Never accidental .

5 ways salz describes isnt a selfie pg 3

    1. Selfies arent for the ages (pg 3)

    2. Selfies dont make pretentious claims pg 3

3.if both your hands are in the picture and  its not a mirror shot , technically its mot a selfie. ( pg 3)

    4. portraits

    5. not a person in the picture,

    – Salz believe selfies are casual imporvised and fast. In addition he believes selfies are nearly always taken from within an arm’s length of subject otherwise it isnt a selfie. In my opinion i think his definition of a selfie is correct. He thinks of them as casual and believes the  point of them is to be seen there and at that moment. Which i strongly think is right on the other hand there are definitely some certain selfies that seem like he strongly dislikes. Like Kim Kardashians. He never referred to it as incorrect selfie but based on his word choice you can tell he isnt in favor of the picture. “The pose is utterly banal; shes like millions of others admiring themselves in mirrors”.
